That same year, Highland Park became a city of Highland Park.
Highland Park is a city in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Kalamazoo–Battle Creek, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known settlers in what is now Highland Park were men who arrived on a ship called "Aurora" in 1810. They found land that had been purchased by Major James Livingston from the Ottawa people. The first town charter was granted in 1816 and it was renamed Highland Park after the highlands near where it sits today. In 1824, John Fenton erected a sawmill on Mud Lake which became one of the most important economic engines for the community during its early years. In 1830, he donated property to make way for what is now State Street and then developed his mill into one of the largest mills in Michigan. During World War II, Highland Park served as an Army Air Force training center where many key veterans worked including General George Patton and Admiral Chester Nimitz. After the war ended, many people returned to their homes while redevelopment continued until 1984 when The City of Kalamazoo approved plans for a new downtown mall that would have included several thousand jobs within walking distance of each other (the current shopping district forms much of this original landscape). The old mill complex still stands as an interesting landmark with its 120-foot tall frame water tower still visible today. It also houses several restaurants and businesses including two banks which remain open today despite being bombed during World War II – one right next door to Fort Wayne’s historic stockyards just south of I-96 exit 249; and another across from Woodward’s Department Store on present day State Street just east of Stadium Boulevard (now Waterfront Drive). Today's mill complex played an important role throughout much of history but sadly it has been taken down over time due to various reasons such as fire damage and vandalism however portions have been preserved both inside and outside Historic District boundaries making it possible for tourists to experience some amazing pieces of history firsthand!
