In 1907, local farmers voted to change their name to "Inkster Township" in order to distance themselves from other villages in the area with similar names. Today, Inkster remains a small community with close-knit relationships among its residents. The first permanent settler in Inkster was John Atwater in 1824. The present-day town was organized on December 15, 1868, from parts of Holland Township and Lansing Township. It became a city on November 3, 1974. Inkster's history reflects its location as a small agricultural community near the eastern end of Oakland County and its reliance on agriculture for most of its economy until the mid-20th century. Edwin Hargrave (1846-1927), an early settler and one of Inkster's namesake characters who operated a printing press in what is now Fort Wayne, Indiana during the late 19th century helped revive the local paper industry after it had been largely destroyed by戦争 and other industrial chains that came into being following World War I. By 1925, however, ink production had fallen victim to changes in technology that made photography more popular among consumers; printed books also took off as an alternative medium for marketing goods and services over radio or television broadcasts.
