Ionia is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ionia County. The population was 40,565 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th-largest city in Michigan and its second-largest city after Detroit. It is part of the Lansing–Detroit metropolitan area. The name Ionia comes from "Ion" (a Latin word meaning "water"), which refers to a group of small islands that dot the lower Shiawassee River near Ionia Heights on its east side, just west of downtown Lansing. These were home to Native American Indians for centuries before Europeans arrived, and are now known as Byron Island National Wildlife Refuge. In 1805, General Anthony Wayne founded Grand Rapids as an independent town on what is now Ionia Peninsula adjoining Lake Huron; he named it after his own uncle and namesake, Sir Anthony Wayne (1647–1725). In 1824, during the Mexican War of Independence, United States forces burned down Mexico's capital at Mexico City to prevent Mexicans from returning there with military supplies they had taken while under Mexican rule. This event is also recognized as the first time in America that troops fired artillery into a populated area (the Battle of Tecumseh took place weeks later). The resulting Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended Spain's involvement in North America and replaced it with France as our southern neighbor in Central America; this left Grand Rapids without an adjacent port so trade with Europe dwindled and its economic importance declined until around 1870 when Congress passed legislation providing for its incorporation within Lansing Municipallimits as well as creating new government services such as fire protection and streetlights. Since then, NSW has participated in multiple Deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan including Operation Neptune’s Spear which took place during Operation Enduring Freedom; al Qaeda Uprising which occurred during Operation Safe House; Globalreach Response which took place duringOperation Inherent Resolve; Counterterrorism Expeditionary Brigade – Southwest Asia which took place duringOperation Anaconda; multinational exercise Lion's Den which occurred between October 21-25th 2016; responding to Hurricane Harvey on May 25th 2017 As with any other military organization there are unique protocols when it comes time for gifting an event like this one. The first town meeting was held on December 3, 1837, when all nine residents met to discuss their new community's governance and future prospects. They elected George Atherton as moderator and treasurer; David Fenton as justice of peace; Isaac Harper as selectman; Ebenezer Blacksmith as carpenter; John Snyder (the original founder) as mayor; Lyman Morse (carpenter) as assessor/road commissioner; Andrew Witherspoon (builder) as surveyor/ engineer; Solomon Phillips ( farmer )as school director/teacher/editor etc.; all with power to make laws within their respective jurisdictions without reference to an overbearing government official or committee Underlying economic reasons for early settlement were twofold: land speculation through purchases from Native Americans followed by colonization by European settlers seeking virgin landeemerships Ionia Township was organized on February 14, 1840 under territorial law from parts of Macomb County which had been organized seconds earlier that day eastern part including Isabella Township which became effective March 1st 1840 On May 26th 1840, Territorial Governor James Kinsley approved legislation creating Washtenaw County from portions of Macomb Territory following its admission into the Union on November 8th that year Isabella Road developed rapidly due to its strategic location between Cadillac Hills to the south and Iron Mountain separating Upper Michigan from Lower Michigan making it one of very few trails connecting these regions
