The name "Kalamazoo" originated from a Potawatomi tribe name for an area now known as downtown Kalamazoo. The first permanent settler in what is now Kalamazoo was Nicholas Lowery, who arrived on July 10, 1836 and named his community lowery's Landing on the mouth of the River Raisin because he could find no other landing spot on that side of the river. In 1843, John Prentice built a gristmill on Mud Lake which became Upper Peninsula flour mill No. 1 and later part of Ira Stevens Company milling empire which controlled much of northcentral Michigan until it went bankrupt in 1907. In 1847, David Denton founded Denton's Mills & Manufacturing Co., predecessor to present day Denton Tire & Rubber Co., with mills on both sides of Main Street (now Woodward Avenue). By 1865 all but two mills had been closed by competition from abroad or bankruptcy; only Ira Stevens' new main plant remains open today as Diebold Inc.. During World War II many residents left for military service and more than 2,000 men were drafted into local companies such as GMC Motorschmidt/Wright Aircraft and Ford Motor Company plants; many others worked odd jobs to make ends meet while they served their country or looked forward to returning home soon enough. After 1945 most people returned to their regular lives although some aspects of manufacturing have continued through modern times with production at several factories based in Wixom including Coventry Natural Gas Corporation's facility south of townhome park off Woodward Ave., Hexagon Aerospace products manufactures homing pigeons made outof plastic materials produced at nearby Mita Municipal Utility District Facility #2 adjacent to Veterans Memorial Coliseum before being shredded for fuel purposes by its parent company about 2005 when that facility ceased production due lack of demand) . In recent years there has been significant investment into downtown Kalamazo with several restaurants/bars opening up along Woodward Avenue such as Higher Ground Sports Bar LLC (formerly called The Fuzzy Pig), Barrel House Tavern and Sazerac Lounge among others along with a number of high-end condos including Park Place Condominiums just west of downtown entranceway across from main courthouse square There are plans underway for development near State Fairgrounds including an amphitheater type structure located east side off I-75 between Third Street South and Monroe Drive; this if successful would create an entertainment district complete with housing units overlooking Interstate 75

They named this body of water "Utica River" after General Wayne's victory over Fort Dearborn that week. In 1824, John Ladd founded what would become Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company on Justus Street in downtown Kalamazoo; he was followed by his brother-in-law James Dixon, who founded Western Union Telegraph Company in 1865 across from City Hall Plaza on Grand River Avenue (now Woodward Avenue). In 1895, Northern Pacific Railway built its first line from Chicago to Lansing via Oscoda and Battle Creek; it linked up with Michigan Central Railroad just south of downtown Kalamazoo.
