Kalamazoo, Michigan is a city in the western United States. The population was 26,554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kalamazoo County. The City of Kalamazoo is named after Mount Pleasant on which it was founded in 1837 as a small trading post by General John Custer and his troops during their campaign against Chief Bowyer's band of Indians. The first European to visit what is now Kalamazoo was Father Marquette in 1699 while exploring present-day Michigan Territory for Jesuit missionaries. He named the site "Mount Pleasant" after his home village on the Canadian side of Lake Superior, Mount Prospect on the American side, andthe town he discovered at Mount Pleasant Lake about 12 miles (19 km) east of today's downtown Kalamazoo.
