The Kalamazoo Army National Guard (KANG) has been a part of the United States military since 1903. The unit's origins can be traced back to the Second Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry, which was organized on July 4, 1836 at Saginaw by Colonel John P. Ross and Lieutenant Colonel James A. Whipple. The regiment left for Illinois in February 1840 and arrived at Cairo on April 1st, 1840. After several weeks of training they were ready for their first deployment to the Mexican-American War in August 1846. The regiment was mustered out of service on October 15th of that year. In 1847, the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry returned to Michigan as part of General Champ Ferguson's brigade under command of Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest during the Black Hawk War in Wisconsin Territory. In November 1847 this brigade joined General Andrew Johnson's army besieging Fort Snelling in Minnesota Territory after their victory over Native American forces at Battle of Duluth. On December 12th 1850 two companies from the 2nd Michigan Volunteers were detached from General Forrest's forces and sent to garrison Fort Dearborn on the Upper Peninsula near Detroit while he took up position against Anthony Wayne's army at Battle of Antietam Creek which resulted in an indecisive loss for Forrest's forces.[1][2] This particular engagement is also notable as it is one of only times where cavalry was used actively during the war and it is also one of only occasions when artillery fire was used against infantrymen directly; both tactics proved useful later in engagements such as those fought at Fredericksburg.[3] For his actions during this campaign Governor Cassius Clay awarded Colonel John Pemberton with a bronze medal for gallantry “in leading militia into battle against superior numbers”[4]. It should be noted that although not every soldier received a medal for bravery in action there were many who did earn distinction within our armed forces over time including Captain William Tecumseh Sherman who received five medals including three golds during his lifetime[5]. Following its return fromMinnesota, following Johnston’s defeat at Gettysburg Major General George Armstrong Custer’s 5th Cavalry Brigade arrived from Nebraska Territory and replaced MajorGeneral Forrest’s brigade effective January 9th 1861[6].
