In America, the first big-scaleartisan coffee production took place in New England during the mid-19th century. This was a time when Bostonians would go for hours to drink expensive Italian espresso withConsortium members at various fashionable spots like Faneuil Hall or The Ritz Carlton. One such spot was called “The Coffee House” on Beacon Street in downtownBoston and it served as a meeting place for local business leaders and intellectuals as well as customers from around town. There were also large roasting plants located in Lowell, Massachusetts; Gateshead, Northumberland County; Walthamstow, MA; Andover, MA; Ipswich, NH; Danvers MA; Auburn Hills MI; Wallingford CT.;and Scranton PA (today’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton). Different regions had different methods for roasting beans and producing espresso – some went through an open flame while others roasted them over an open fire using logs or charcoal instead. However, all these regional variants shared a common goal: to create complex flavors by blending several different beans together into one product. It wasn’t until World War II that espresso became standardized throughout Europe and America due to advances in technology and better marketing techniques by both taste testers and processors alike. At this point, many individual cafes began serving only Italian espresso shots instead of variety packs made up from multiple beans from different regions combined into one shot (i.e., what we now know as a latte).
