The Kalamazoo Coast Guard has been providing assistance to the community since 1903. The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect the citizens of Michigan and its coastline by providingt on-the-ground response to emergencies and conducting search and rescue operations. In 1903, the Kalamazoo Coast Guard was created when two different agencies were amalgamated: the Port Huron Police Department and the Michigan State Police. At that time, there were not many coast guard stations in Michigan so patrol vessels were used for Search And Rescue missions. In 1935, a new station was built at Unalaska Island which became our main station after it was donated by Mrs. J.L Beattie. In 1967, we moved from Unalaska Island to our current location in downtown Kalamazoo. Since then, we have providedmulti-jurisdictional cooperation including search and rescue missions during disasters such as hurricanes Charley and Ike as well asresponding to exercises such as Marine Corps amphibious assault training exercises or Air Force airlift flights carrying supplies to remote communities near our shores. We also offer educational opportunities for local students throughOur Coastal Patrol Academy which educates young people about maritime safety and how to respond safely when called upon to help with searches or rescues on our coastline

But before the coast guard there was a group of people who helped protect our coasts and waterways. The coast guard gift history begins with the creation of the Coast Guard in 1898. At that time, America was just starting to become an country and there wasn’t enough money to hire a full-time coast guard. So, some officials decided to create a volunteer force instead. This volunteer force would be made up of sailors, fishermen, and even other civilians who were willing to help keep our coasts safe. The first Coast Guard was only able to do so much because it lacked resources. In fact, until 1915, the Coast Guard didn’t even have any boats! So, for years, they relied on using whatever vessels they could findto help them patrol their waters. However, this didn’t always go well. For example, in 1915, one of the Coast Guard's first ships sank after hitting a rock while trying to chase down a thief on shoreline! Luckily though, things began to change in 1923 when President Franklin D Roosevelt created what is known as the National Security Act. This act gave Congress more power over how America's security was protected and it also allowed for more funding for the Coast Guard. From then on out, things got better for the Coast Guard thanks to Reagan and Bush Sr., two good presidents who loved spending money! Since then however, things haven't been as rosy for the Coast Guards as they once were! For one thing, there has been increasing competition from other agencies such as law enforcement authorities and cruise ship passengers themselves! Additionally though- budget cuts have resulted in less manpower being available at times which makes it difficult for officers to do their job properly! Nevertheless- despite these challenges- many people still appreciate all that the Coast Guards do every day!
