Kalamazoo is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, with a population of 114,821 at the 2010 census. The metropolitan area has a population of 534,711. Kalamazoo is the fourth-largest city in Michigan and the second-largest in southern Michigan after Detroit. It is also one of the ten most populous cities in America and ranks as the eleventh largest city in Europe by population. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kalamazoo were French traders seeking trade routes to Russia from St. Clair County on the lower Great Lakes region during 1697–98 expedition led by Jacques Marquette and his party; they named it "Catherine" for Queen Catherine de' Medici, mother of Louis XIV of France. In 1813, General Zachary Taylor founded Fort Dearborn on Eau Claire River near present-day downtown Kalamazoo to protect American settlers encroaching on Indian land west of Detroit from British forces under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer who were pursuing Native Americans fleeing an upcoming battle at Little Bighorn near Chicago Heights. In 1815, President James Kossuth appointed John Sibley as Commissioner for Indian Affairs with jurisdiction over all northern and central Michigan tribes including those living east of Lake Huron as well as some west of that lake within present day Flintshire Township, Washtenaw County and part of Oakland County (the eastern end then being inside present day Traverse City). On December 8, 1815 Sibley visited Kalamazoo where he reported: "I have found here individuals who are acquainted with arms and warlike proceedings against their own government which I am inclined to think will lead them soon into engagement against us if we do not take this opportunity to put a stop to it." Acting commissioner Isaac Stevens arrived January 12, 1816 accompanied by several hundred men under Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Casserly's command; Stevens began purchasing land for military purposes from various tribes along Treaty Line Road northwestward from Mackinac Island throughpresent day Battle Creek Township before reported back home January 27 reporting that "All Parties agreeably thereto have agreed". This purchase totaled 1 million acres (4 km²). When Stevens returned home February 2nd he discovered that Kossuth had replaced him with Captain David Wilkinson who ordered military posts established at Isabella Springs (now Dowagiac) on Lake Superior shoreline southward beyond Mackinac Island; Kossuy was effectively governing only western Michigan while Wilkinson controlled all other areas northward toward Grand Rapids where he installed artillery batteries around main entrance onto river following initial settlement there in 1795 by French trappers/adventurers Pierre Lacouture et al.. In 1796 Augustus Woodward became first white settler in what would become Kalamazoo when he purchased 640 acres (2 km²) northeast from lumber baron NicholasReuterser along treaty line Road between Mackinac Island Ferry Landing and modern downtown Kalamazou

It is the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit and the 11th largest in the United States. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kalamazoo were French traders from Quebec in 1534 and 1535, when they encountered a group of native Americans called the "Great Lakes Tribes." Jesuit missionaries traveled to what is now Kalamazoo in 1696 and 1697, seeking converts to Catholicism. In 1701, General George Washington's army burned down two villages near present-day Kalamazoo because their occupants had refused to submit to British rule. The Battle of Grand Coulee was fought nearby on July 10, 1812; one American soldier died and three others were wounded during this battle that helped lead to Treaty of Ghent ending war between Great Britain and America. Kalamazoo was founded by Jens Jensen (late 15th century) as an inland trading post on his farmstead located along present-day US 41 south of Lansingburgh Township east of Battle Creek Township on October 6, 1810 while he was still serving as captain with Danish troops under Swedish general Johan Nyquistqvist during Napoleonic Wars against France.
