Kalamazoo, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kalamazoo County. The population was 63,821 at the 2010 census. In 1840, Andrew Mellon donated $25000 to start Macalester College; this gift helped make Kalamazoo important as a center for higher education during times of economic prosperity throughout Michigans history from 1850 to 1970s In 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivered an impressive address at Kingston University (now Wayne State University) before departing for Ford’s Theatre within minutes after being elected President with 72% of the popular vote while only having held office for four months The water wheel that powers today’s Dearborn Street Subway station was started here by Wm Fenton & Sons Manufacturing Company in 1906 – making it one of only two locations across all fifty states where industrial gasoline engines have been used to power streetcars . After World War II ended and industries moved away from Kalamazoo due to aerospace plants opening nearby such as Pratt & Whitney Aeronautical Laboratories (later Lockheed Martin), downtownKalamazoo began experiencing increased development with skyscrapers being erected such as Grace Cathedral (1947), Henry Ford Hospital(1948), State Capitol Building(1951), Renaissance Center(1963) but most notably FirstMerit Bank Tower which has been home to One Financial Place since 1981 . DowntownKalamazo experienced significant gentrification beginning around 1990 when large real estate developers bought up properties surrounding downtown including much older buildings dating back to 1833 such as Grace Cathedral then razed creating huge parking lots behind it . This led to massive amounts of traffic congestion on Dearborn Street especially during rush hours causing many residents who depended upon Main Street businesses for their morning caffeine fix to move out into neighborhoods like North Park or East Lansing
Kalamazoo was founded in 1837 by John C. Kalamazoo and his brother, George B. Kalamazoo. The city was named for the Kalamazoos, a Native American tribe. It became an incorporated city in 1871. In 1907, Kalamazoo became one of the first cities to adopt a charter as a city of commerce and industry. In 1924, the city renamed itself after General Motors Corporation president Charles Ewing Kasky.
