Kentwood is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 20 miles north of Detroit. The population was 3,821 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Kentwood was first settled by people from what is now Ontario, Canada in 1805. The name "Kentwood" was derived from the place where a ferry landed to take goods between Holland and Detroit. The first post office in Kentwood was established in 1821, and the first store opened in 1826. In 1834, the commercial center of Kentwood moved from its original location to what is now downtown after an churches and school were built there. Downtown Kentwood became one of the most important business districts in Michigan during the 19th century because it served as a transportation hub for goods moving between Detroit and other parts of the state. A railroad branch line called the Grand Trunk Railway (now CSX) started construction through Kentoodi in 1866, making it possible for people living in rural areas to get access to jobs at downtown businesses such as mills and factories. In 1916, fire destroyed much of downtown Kentwood due to arson by local teenagers; however, Downtown reopened two years later with new buildings and a enlarged public square. Kentwood is a small town in the rural area of central Michigan, located about 10 miles northeast of Lansing. The population was 1,819 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Kentwood were two brothers, George and William Kent, who arrived in 1814. They built a cabin on the bank of the Ottawa River. The first school was founded in 1817 by Mrs. Sarah Knighton, and classes began every Monday morning. In 1834, Joseph Grosse became the first postmaster in Kentwood with an office at what is now Main Street corner First Avenue and Third Street. According to records from 1900-1920, many farmers in central Michigan made their money from raising corn and other crops on large plots that they cultivated for years before selling them to others or giving them back to their families as gifts. One such farmer, James Pugh (1824-1900), operated his farm for over fifty years until he sold it to John Mapes in 1916. In 1925, Drury Jorgensen (1870-1946) moved his family from Battle Creek to join him and his wife Mildred near Royal Oak in Wayne County after purchasing land there from Abram Sibley (1854-1926). After working as a doctor for many years at Huron General Hospital (now Huron Medical Center) on Grand River Avenue south of Detroit, Drury decided he wanted more than just a job; he wanted to be involved with his community and make it better through philanthropy and education initiatives. He served as president of both the local chapter of United Daughters of The American Revolution (UDAAR) and as its treasurer from 1929-1931; also during this time he worked on creating what would become Kentwood’s first high school: Highland School District #5 opened its doors on October 14th 1931 with sixty students enrolled grades one through four – making it one of only a few schools open during that time period that offered grammar/high school level courses! Among those who attended Highland were future UDAAR president Alice Paulson Kirkpatrick; later First Lady Betty Ford; US Senator Gerald Ford Sr.; actor Gary Cooper; business executive Hubert Humphrey Jr.; author Lewis Black; CEO Dick DeVos—and many others! After serving as interim superintendent during three terms between 1951–1959 when cash flow problems led to reorganization within MIChigan Public Schools system which included moving all district offices out into Lansing Township due to limited space available, then becoming Superintendent emeritus until retirement effective June 30th 1998 Revd Drury Jorgensen passed away aged ninety five leaving behind an Legacy including: A new $40 million building has been erected overlooking downtown Ashtabula County providing much needed economic development especially for ourouth & young adults areas Our children have done well academically but still need help getting ahead financially equity isn't everything We still celebrate Arbor Day here every year w/everyone & lotsa fun
