Kentwood, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan on the Flint River. The population was 5,898 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit Kentwood were French traders in 1795 and 1802. They named it "L'Isle aux Meadows" after a nearby island in the river. The first permanent settler in what is now Kentwood was David Franks, who arrived about 1800 from Pennsylvania. He built a gristmill on the east side of the river and started to cultivate maize and other crops around 1805-06. In 1824, John Broughton bought land adjacent to Franks' mill for $1 per acre (0.40 hectares). He organized a township with eight voting members and set up a government under which he leased rights to sell alcohol and tobacco products to settlers, bought milk from local farmers, constructed fences surrounding his farmstead, laid out streets and built private homes between 1830 and 1840. Broughton's descendants continue to live in Kentwood through their affiliation with The Broughton Company thatowned land around town beginning in 1865 until it merged into Unilever Limited in 1959; many of these family members still reside there today as landowners or employees of Unilever Limited subsidiaries such as KBR plc., EMI Music Entertainment Inc., Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Co., et al.. During Prohibition era (1937 - 1945), several businesses operated within or near downtown Kentwood including Butchie's NoHo Tavern & Saloon by Jethro Buttolph; Joe's Bar & Grill by Joseph Papp; The Gilded Cage brothel by Harry Arno; Eddie Cantor's speakeasy located behind Joe's Bar & Grill called 'Eddie Cantor’s Lighthouse'.

By 1920, Kentwood had over 1,000 residents and was one of the largest towns in Washtenaw County. In 1923, Kentwood became a city after being granted city status by the Michigan Legislature. The population of Kentwood declined during World War II due to large numbers of military personnel sent to war abroad. However, following the end of World War II, Kentwood began to grow again and has since become one of the most populous cities in Michigan.
