Kentwood is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located northeast of Detroit on the Ottawa River. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Wixom metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1834 by Nicholas Kent and his family, who named it after their Milton County home, "Kentwood." The first post office opened in 1836 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1840,Nicholas' son John built a sawmill on the river for $4 per day from which he made lumber for local homes, churches and businesses. In 1848, Nicholas' grandson Augustus moved to Kentwood from Stevens Point with his family to take up land grants given them by the government as part of an effort to encourage settlement along the Ottawa River basin by American citizens west of Great Lakes cities such as Chicago and Detroit. By 1850, there were over 100 people living in Kentwood; many had come from Stevens Point or nearby towns such as Holland (now Winnetka), Plymouth and White Lake. In 1857, Nicholas’ great-grandson George Washington Kent acquired title to 2 square miles (3 km²) on both sides of the river east of where today's town stands; this land became known as Eastland Township. In 1870, during prohibition era Prohibitionist Ebenezer Brown ran unsuccessfully for township trustee against incumbent Abraham Lincoln Simpson; Brown's supportersClaimed that because Eastland Township voted no on prohibition ordinance proposed by township supervisor John Jourdan they could be considered bootleggersand should not be counted among the township's voters Two years later when prohibition ended with passage of The Eighteenth Amendment to United States Constitution in November 1920alcohol became legal once more within Michigan limits so ballot box stuffing allegations did nothing but further fuel anti- prohibition sentiment throughout much of rural America including eastern Upper Peninsula). After that event most residents reverted back to voting Democrat until recent times when Republicans have won majorities at all levels except school board which they now hold majority control over .
