The Lansing, Michigan Air Force Base is home to the largest air force in the United States. The base has a population of over 160,000 people and it employs over 350 military members. The Air Force has a long history in Lansing, dating back to World War II. In 1949, the Air Force opened the Military Annex on East Huron Street, which housed an air traffic control tower and barracks for airmen and their families. In 1955, the Air Force constructed an annex to the east of thebase that became known asthe Master Sgt Armory Building. The building served as Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HQHS) until 1978 when HQ USAF moved into its present location on South Division Avenue. In 1990, HQ USAF moved again when it was redesignatedthe 349th Fighter Wing (349 FW). With headquarters relocated from Grand Rapids to Lansing it provided more space for operations within AFB LANSING! Today’s 349 FW flies F-15C/D Eagle fighters from both bases and provides support for Army units stationed at nearby Fort Harrison and Fort Ross

Lansing is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ingham County. The population was 37,491 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in Michigan and the fourth-largest in Wayne County. It is also one of the most populous cities on Michigan's Upper Peninsula and home to several colleges and universities, including Eastern Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, and Wayne State University. Lansing was founded by George Washington Snyder on April 12, 1796 as part of his Detroit Purchase land claim from France. The town became a port on the Rouge River where goods were unloaded onto barges for delivery to other settlements along Lake Superior. The first store opened in 1812 and by 1820 Lansing had become a village with a courthouse, schoolhouse, post office, jail and two churches. In 1824 Lansing became part of the newly formed Huron County when it was created from what remained of former French Canada. On January 1, 1850 Lansing merged with neighboring East Lansing into one municipality under its own government. In 1870s Lansing experienced rapid growth due to waves of immigration from eastern Europe; Bellevue Avenue became known as "The Polish Way" because so many Poles settled there during that time period. Because few English speakers could speak or understand Polish well enough to stay in their community (or even live there), phrases such as "Gdziebyś? Z Polski?" (Where are you from? Are you from Poland?) quickly came to be associated with this neighborhood throughout much of Greater Lansing's history until recently when English language education has become more widespread hereabouts (though not exclusively). However some significant landmarks that remain closely tied to Polish culture include Stalniki Park which features intricate stone architecture typical of earlier Warsaw Ghetto neighborhoods; Chopin Hall which houses one of Lewandowski's historical pianos; various cultural events throughout year including Bach concerts at SEMU amphitheater during Lent; annual Poznan Plaque dedication ceremony honoring surviving Poles who have made Allegany County their permanent home; numerous restaurants Kuhn's German Bakery being among them still serving up traditionalPolish dishes centuries after its closure... During World War II many people working within local industry went off to fight in war while others worked inside munitions plants or served as soldiers on General Motors' Mack Truck Assembly Line located just outside town limits near Battle Creek.. Many residents boycotted war2 protest marches organized by Veterans for Peace following Pearl Harbor but eventually did join forces with patriotic Americans against Japan after hearing about atrocities happening back home....Today many people are proud Tunkers despite hardships faced during these harsh times like mass transit being unreliable due to lack $$$$ capacity only able to get buses once an hour plus long wait times for rides outbound....There have been times since 9/11 when tensions between different parts of town have boiled over such as recent demonstrations against high tuition rates at EMU but overall it seems things are getting better... Lansing is experiencing some growing pains however like new development spurring prices higher than ever before while jobs don't keep coming along like they used too... Overall though I believe that through hard work and cooperation both sides will come around
In 1847, the first group of Germans settled in what is now Lansing. They were farmers who had come overland from Bayern, Germany. The town grew quickly and by 1872, it had a population of about 50 people. In 1881, Lansing became a city and its name was changed to Lansing Township. In 1907, the township was again renamed to Lansing City. On July 4, 1914, Lansing City was merged into the newly created Michigan State University town of East Lansing.
