Livonia is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous municipality in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and one of its three cities. Livonia is also the county seat for Oakland County. The first settler in Livonia was Eli Whitney, who arrived in 1817 with his family from Connecticut. Whitney founded a cotton plantation on the east bank of Grand River north of present-day Livonia. In 1825, he donated land to build what would become Oak Harbor Township and organized it as a village. He named his new township after his home country: Holland County, New York (now Ontario). Livonia's business district grew quickly during the 19th century; by 1850, it had over 60 businesses including banks, grocery stores, flour mills and sawmills. The city annexed neighboring townships during this time period – most notably Novi on the west side and Royal Oak on the east side – to form what is now known as Livonia Township (renamed Royal Oak Township in 1896). During World War II, Livonia played an important role as an munitions manufacturing center due to its location near strategic missile sites throughout Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio. After the war ended, many factory jobs were lost in Livonia because of plant closures and automation but there have been recent efforts to revitalize old factories with new technology such as green roofs and energy efficiency retrofits The economy has recovered since 2009 but some concerns remain about job loss amid global recessionary trends across all industries

Livius, who named it after his wife's birthplace, Lievenia on the island of Islay. It became a town in 1859 and a village in 1907. The City of Livonia was created on December 1, 1933 from portions of the Town of Muskegon Heights. On January 1, 2014, all sections of the City of Livonia were merged into the new Cityof Lansing.
