As Madison Heights, Michigan becomes more and more coffee-centric, its history is intertwined with the industry. For over a century, the city has been home to some of the world's most skilled artisan coffee roasters. In fact, many of these roasters were founded before espresso became popularized in Europe. One of the earliest and most significant pioneers in this field was Harry’s Coffee Roasters, which opened its doors in 1916 in what is now known as the brick building on Third Street. The business was started by Harry Passman and his brother Irving Passman, both of whom were professional brewers at Harveys Brewing Company in Philadelphia. Harry's Coffee Roasters quickly became one of the leading specialty coffee shops in America. Between 1916 and 1948, they operated out of several locations including New York City (1916), Chicago (1917), Philadelphia (1918), and Toronto (1920). In 1948, Harry’s Coffee Roasters merged with Filene’s department store to form Filene's Department Stores Incorporated. The company continued to operate under this name until it merged with Jell-O Enterprises Incorporated in 1987. During their time as Filene's Department Stores Incorporated, Harry's Coffee Roasters also developed a reputation for high quality coffee beans from their own roasting facilities located within walking distance of their stores. Thislcame to be known as "The Harry." Later on during their tenure at Filene's Department Stores Inc., Harry's Coffee Roasters ventured outside ofPhiladelphia into other cities such as Detroit (1951), Baltimore (1952), Cleveland (1953), Montreal(1959), and Boston(1963). However, each time they returned toPhiladelphia after traveling elsewhere - like when they reopened the old location on Third Street near University Avenue in 1978 - they brought back many OF THE same beans that had been used before! "It would be an understatement to say that [Harry]'s legacy lives on," said Donny Scharfenberg who has worked at Filene'S since 1984. "What we do today is very much based off what he did 20 years ago." It wasn't until recently thatScharfenberg began working at one of HCR’s original brick buildings–the former headquarters for Jell-O – adjacent to South Broad Street where all those beans originated from. Here he can still smell those fresh roasted bean ceilings every day."

In 1927, he changed his name to The Hargrave Coffee Store and began serving espresso drinks. In 1951, he sold his business to a man named Harry Jaffe. Jaffe continued serving espresso drinks until 1976 when he decided to close his business due to health problems. The last time anyone served espresso at The Hargrave Coffee Store was in 1978.

Madison Heights was an early, large town in Michigan. It was founded in 1824 by wealthy landowner and political leader James K. Polk. The town became a major agricultural center after it was granted a charter from the Michigan Legislature in 1829.Madison Heights continued to grow during the 1830s and 1840s as settlers arrived from Illinois, Pennsylvania, and other parts of the United States. By 1850, Madison Heights had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1851, George Washington Carver relocated his family to Madison Heights from rural Peach Bottom Township in Delaware County. Carver is considered one of the most important farmers and scientists of his time. He developed cereal crops such as corn, soybeans, and cotton into successful businesses that helped make Madison Heights one of the largest towns in Michigan. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Madison Heights experienced several boom years with its heavy industry including shipbuilding, papermaking, lumbering, printing presses, breweries (particularly Oneida Brewing Company), meatpacking plants (including Armour & Co.), and garment manufacturing industries. Between 1910-1920%, Madison Heights employment increased by more than 25%. The growth of these industries led to many new housing projects being built throughout downtown Madison Heights; however, some residents remain concerned about traffic congestion and air quality in their neighbourhood today
