The Marquette Army National Guard was first organized in 1892. The organization adopted a system of unit insignia, which included the shoulder patch and other badges. In 1898, the national guard became an separate service with its own budget and command structure. In 1910, the armament regiment was formed within the national guard as part of a reorganization of the military in America. The armament regiment became responsible for all artillery equipment within the National Guard. In 1916, Camp Randall Army Air Field was opened in Marquette to serve as a training ground for American World War I pilots. From 1919-1929, Camp Randall served as home to both aviation units and infantry regiments from Michigan and Wisconsin. In 1933, General George Custer's last battle occurred near Fort Riley while on campaign in India; this event is often considered to have saved democracy from dictatorship by endangering British interests there. As a result of this event, Congress approved $5 million to be used specifically towards training American airmen at Fort Riley during World War II. A new wing was built at Camp Randall during WWII in order to house Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighter planes that were being produced by Willys-Overland Corporation in Wichita Kansas . Marquette, Michigan is a small city located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 6,651 at the 2010 census. The City of Marquette is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Michigan with people from over seventy-five different cultures living together. The history of Marquette began with the arrival of European settlers in 1798. The first permanent Europeans to live in what is now Marquette were French traders and missionaries. They built a trading post on the Kawkawacke River and called it La Pointe. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne battlered against Native Americans at Kawkawacke Lake and discovered rich fur resources there. This led to increased settlement in what is now Marquette by white men and their families beginning in 1815. In 1824, James Neely was elected as Mayor of Marquette and he served until his death in 1870. He was a key figure during the early days of Detroit's growth because he provided financial support for both projects. During his time as Mayor, he also founded two churches – St John's Episcopal Church on Saginaw Street and First Presbyterian Church on Woodward Avenue – which are still functioning today. In 1836, George Wabash laid out a new route across central Michigan that would later become known as State Road 10 (now I-94). His plan called for an interchange between State Road 9 (now US-26) and State Road 10 near present day downtown Marquette; this interchange would eventually be named after him, Wabash Boulevard. However, due to budgetary constraints back then, Wabash only constructed part of his planned highway system and only used portions of current SR 10/SR 9 corridors within town limits instead of allocating funds specifically to developing these routes into communities like Marquette proper. As a result, much development never took place along Wabash Boulevard/SR 10 corridor due to lacklustre funding prospects combined with resistance from local officials who saw this area as their backyard - something that has been generally true throughout much OFMATA transportation planning over time! This situation changed when Governor Snyder announced plans for the Midwestern expressway project in late 2013 which aimed to improve connectivity between Detroit metropolitan area (DMA) eastward via I-696/I-75W & I-275W & westward via M-1/US 12E & M-2&MICHIGAN AVErette Baynes .
