Commodore Sloat donated $5,000 for the construction of a new public library and park in Marquette. In 1913, another major donation was made when Rear Admiral David Ladd donated $20,000 for the erection of a high-school gymnasium and sports stadium. During World War II, Navy sailors visited Marquette on numerous occasions to exchange supplies and equipment with local businesses and citizens. On September 8, 1942, Rear Admiral Harry Wohlgren bestowed upon the city an honor guard vessel USS Quincy (APA-183) as a celebrate their victory over Nazi Germany’s V-2 weapon system at Kiel Canal. After the war ended, many warships were decommissioned including Quincy which returned to service in 1946 as part of the Detroit River Fleet. In 1951 Captain Jens Rasmussen founded Rasmussen’s Marine Gifts Incorporated which was responsible for manufacturing much of what is now known about navy deployed gifts around town including decorations for weddings and other special events as well as individual gifts for family members or friends within reason. Marquette is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ottawa County. The population was 927 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan and one of its ten most populous cities. The history of Marquette began with French traders who set up trading posts along the Detroit River in 1701. By 1734, settlers had founded a town on land that now includes much of downtown Marquette. The first post office opened in 1824 and by 1836, there were 12 stores, 10 blacksmiths, two banks, three churches, four schools and a hospital. In 1830, land was donated to form what is today's uppertown part of Marquette Township; this area later became known as downtown Marquette. In 1847, a jail was built on what is now State Street near Main Street; it served as the county courthouse from 1853 to 1927. In 1861, when Michigan became a state and was divided into counties, marquettes were annexed to Ottawa County; in 1889 they were reincorporated into Wayne County. In 1896–97 an act providing for school unification within Wayne County passed both houses of the Michigan Legislature but failed to be signed by Governor George Romney because he felt that unifying all school districts would create too many problems for individual districts (Romney himself had been superintendent of education for Wayne County at that time). The following year enactment of Act 707 created Oakland Township including much what is now Downtown Marquette; however no action was taken until 1912 when villagehood status for Downtown Marquete was granted by then-Governor James Kuehn as part of his effort to provide more flexibility within the state government for smaller towns/villages which had become popular among Republican politicians during World War I efforts to win support from America's war allies (the "guild" system previously used by English counties]). The USS Constitution (1797-1865) was a United States Navy ship that served in the War of 1812. She was named for the 1797 Constitution of the United States.
In 1847, Marquette, Michigan was founded by David S. Cook and John H. Richardson. The town was named in honor of General George Washington Marquette who had fought in the American Revolution. The first settlers were mostly farmers and their families. By 1850, the population had grown to over 100 people and the town turned to a trading post for goods coming down the Mackinac River from Lake Superior. In 1851, Marquette became an incorporated village with a mayor and twelve trustees. A sawmill on the river helped turn Marquette into a thriving community during its early years. In 1857, while still an unincorporated village, Marquette became part of the United States when it join as a state within the Union on July 1st. At that time, it had a population of only 10 people but it quickly grew to over 200 people thanks to new businesses opened up along the river such as lumberyards and flour mills. The 20th century brought many changes to Marquette including World War II when numerous local military personnel served in Europe; economic downturns during the late 1960s and early 1970s; major construction projects like Interstate 94 which changed everything from downtown landscape to everyday life; and most recently with changes in demographics due to suburbanization of much of Michigan’s northern region which has led to an increase in crime rates in rural areas around Marquette
