The Midland Air Force Base (MAAF) is one of the largest military installations in the United States. It has a population of nearly 60,000 people and it is home to the United States Strategic Command. The MAAF was founded on July 20, 1948 as an arm of the Michigan Air National Guard. In 1959, it became a separate installation and was renamed Midland AAF. The base opened its doors to the public in 1962 and has since been one of America's most popular military bases. The Midland Air Force Base Museum is open every day from 9am to 5pm during Fourth of July weekend and Memorial Day Weekend. Admission is free for all visitors. Midland is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 54,543 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan and its second-largest city on the Great Lakes region after Detroit. Midland is also one of the most populous urban agglomerations in North America and one of its most important commercial, cultural, and educational centers. The history of Midland can be traced back to 1836 when land comprising present-day Midland was granted to Peter Schuyler by Governor John WOODRUFF. On July 1, 1837, Schuyler's heirs sold out their interest in what would become Midland to George HARRISON for $1,000 cash plus 10 acres (4 ha) of land west of Main Street. By 1850, there were only two houses left in town - both were taverns and known as "Harrison's Tavern" and "Parson's Tavern". In 1857–58, new immigrants arrived from Hungary (then part of Russia), Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic), Italy (now Italia), Poland (now Poland), Norway (then parts of Denmark and Sweden), Romania (partially became Transylvania today) and other countries via boats down Lake Huron; they called themselves "The New Europeans." They founded a small community near what is now downtown Midland with about twenty residents total: men working on farms orshaing hay while women watered plants at home; children went to school together until around 1870 when they started going to different schools throughout the area. In 1865–66 General David SUTHERLAND built Fort Dearborn across from what is now downtown Midland on land donated by James MCCORDY Sr.; he named it after his predecessor as governor John PECKLER who had helped purchase the fortification during Indian wars fought between United States forces under General Winfield Scottand Native Americans under Chief Black Hawk. A post office opened at Harrison's Tavern on November 10, 1865; it continued operation until September 14th 1898 when it was moved to downtown Chicago due to mail backlogs caused by World War I mail being delivered through Canada at that time. In 1907 Mayor JOSEPH AUBURN purchased all remaining assets from George HARRISON including Harrison's Tavern which became known as Auburn Bar & Grill located adjacent to the current City Hall building where banquet halls continue today but no longer serve alcohol). Mr. Auburn sold his business interest in 1907 but kept possession of Harrison's Tavern which remained operational until 1957 when it closed due to lack of customers despite many offers for closure from then-Mayor HARRY KAPP who boasted that he had turned every offer down because he wanted Harrison's Innkeepers Association building - still standing - into "a modern hotel". In 1957–58 Mayor HARRY KAPP leased Harrison's Innkeepers Association building which became City Hall before purchasing it outright in 1978 for an undisclosed amount which fundedcitywide redevelopment efforts including demolition/ reconstruction of nearby Oldtown High School followed by construction of the first municipal office complex on Town Common which included a library/ archives/gallery/theater complex as well as retail stores such as Ford dealership etc.. The City Hall complex remains extant today and functions more like a museum than an official government center although development has recently resumed within limits Demolition began within limits again following fire damage suffered from accidental arson last year restoration completed this summer without further loss or damage
The early history of Midland, Michigan is unclear. However, it is known that the area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to arrive in what is now Midland was a Frenchman, Jean Nicolet, in 1794. A small village called Nicolet's Ford was developed on the east side of what is now Midland after he discovered rich land there. In 1824, Midland became a part of the United States and during its early years it struggled to make an impact as a major economic center because of its location at the edge of a big country. But with increased trade and investment from outside the region, Midland began to prosper over time and today it is one of America's most important industrial cities.
