Midland is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 66,620 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan and the largest in Midland County. Midland is home to NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility, which manufactures satellites and spacecraft for America's space program; as well as two major universities: Wayne State University and Grand Valley State University. The area that would become Midland was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The first European to visit what would become Midland was French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1699. In 1796, George Washington explored what became Midland while on his way from Detroit toolinage with General Marquette at Sault Ste. Marie. When he reached Sault Ste Marie, he ordered Captain John Davenport of the USS Discovery to land on its shores because he thought there might be gold hidden among the sand dunes nearby: no such find were made but Washington named both sites after General Marquette – now Winter Haven – who had discovered them earlier that year near present day Mount Pleasant (now Watertown). In 1837, James Mapes surveyed what would become Midland when he reported back to American Surveyor General Ebenezer Richardson about an untested claim along Muskegon River east of Battle Creek on land then part of Ottawa County (now Oakland County). Richardson liked Mapes's report so much that he sent him out full time to survey western Michigan properties between Lake Erie and Mackinac Island before choosing Battle Creek village site over Mapes' choice of Ottawa Village due to its closer location to Fort Wayne (then Thionville) on Indiana Territory side of Lake Erie where Richardson could build a military post for border defense purposes should war break out with Canada or any other nation west of Great Lakes boundaries - an idea later popularized byGeneral George Armstrong Custer during World War II when Ulysses S Grant commissioned him as Commissioner of Indian Affairs under Secretary Seward In 1839, Jens Eriksen located a landing place for ships attempting passage upriver from Manistee Bay on Huron River opposite present day Lansingburgh On July 10, 1841 US Commodore David Dixon opened up navigation channel across upperMissaukee River from Wabash Rapids () into more open water off Little Traverse Bayou just below current day Lansingburgh (). This event marks beginningof commercially successful trade with interior United States through lower Missaukee River area.- "The opening up" refers specifically to Mr Dixon's purchase by Commodore John Geddes () from privateer Pecos Billington (), who had Blockade Runreddy's Clipper ship stranded off Point du Lac., giving her 50 days supplies water and provisions before she sailed back down river ().Geddes offered Dixon $5 per tonne worth coal delivered ashore rather than paying duties on goods exported already paid for by British government (). Post office established at this point under name “Lansingburgh” also serving as trading post proper until creation of new town of Pontiac some years later.– From this point forward Lansingburgh gradually took over most functions associated with old "Lansingburgh". It has been suggested that this naming change may have been relatedto increasing awareness within UpperMississippi region that startxprovinces such as Toledo were emerging as leading commercial centers due to Ohio Agricultural Society's efforts aimed at promoting agriculture statewide.– By 1850 however , commerce along Lower Missaukee River had largely shifted westward toward Superior via Muskegon Heights Bridge crossing Big Blackwater River near modern day Eastpointe Township

In 1905, Midland became part of Lansing County and lost its status as a city; however, it continued to grow rapidly due to its location and importance as a transportation hub. The downtown district became one of America's most popular tourist destinations during the 1920s and 1930s thanks to its architecture and historical significance.
