Midland, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan on the Great Lakes region. The population was 7,636 at the 2010 census. Midland is part of the Muskegon Heights–Midland Township Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first midwestern settlement in what is now Midland was called "Ionia" and was established by Quakers in 1795. Ionia prospered because it had a canal system connecting it to other towns on the Great Lakes and to Detroit. In 1815, Ionia became part of Washington County when that county was created from portions of Macomb and Wayne counties. In 1824, when Grand Rapids became an independent city, Midland's government shifted from village to town status under its new charter. The original plat for MidlandTownship included all present-day Muskegon Heights and parts of two other townships: One housed westward settlers known as "The Gables", while the other bordered onto what is now Lansing Township east of Ionia Road (now M-2). In 1827, James Wirtemeyer purchased 640 acres (256 hectares) south of present-day Midland along Speedway Boulevard for $10 per acre ($ million today). This land became known as Wirtemeyer's Fields after him and his son James Wirtemeyer II developed it into one of America's largest agricultural empires during the late 19th century. By 1880, about 60% of Midlanders were engaged in agriculture; this percentage has declined over time but remains high enough to support local schools, hospitals, roads and businesses today despite hard times experienced during recessions throughout recent decades. By 1909 there were only nine residents living in Midlandtownship; by 1920 there were over 1,000 residents living within its borders alone! When World War II began almost 1/3rd of all farm production across Michigan went up against enemy occupiers; however midlanders did not capitulate politically or economically like many other regions throughout Northwestern Ohio & Pennsylvania which saw mass destruction & displacement due to hostilities – they resisted fiercely through valor & selflessness until finally becoming victims themselves after Japan's atomic bombing raids devastated Hiroshima & Nagasaki – thus ending WWII with an estimated lossof nearly 400 lives including those who livedoshipping directly into nuclear fallout zones! Midland's ZIP code is 48901. The land that would make up Midland was first settled by Native Americans in the 1800s as part of what is now Ottawa County. In 1819, James Kipp and others founded what would become Midland after purchasing 5 square miles (12 km2) from the Ottawa Indians in what is now West Bloomfield Township. The town's name was chosen because it lay on a trade route between Detroit and Buffalo run by General David Wilkinson and his son-in-law Major George Stephenson. The town was platted in 1825 and named for John Crain, an American Revolutionary War soldier who had fought at Vicksburg and Yorktown before being elected as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania in 1793 (the same year that Midlanders voted to create their own township). In 1836, gold was discovered near present day Mount Pleasant when prospectors struck it with Claims No.(T),(W),(X) claims on land later patented to US$1 million by Josiah Warren for $4 per share due to its discovery on July 24th, 1836 under auspices of US Exploring Expedition #1 led by Commodore Matthew Perry during his visit to Upper Peninsula on September 25th & 26th . On December 10th 1830 Indian traders trading with Jonquiline fur traders from Quinnekagam village located about 12 miles east of present day Eau Claire met 2 Frenchmen coming downriver bound for L'Anse aux Meadows where they traded furs for powder which they brought back over ice using their dogsled team followed soon after by several more men also bringing news of large quantity of gold nuggets lying undeveloped scattered over several hundred acres (220 ha) lying just below bluffs east of Big Rapids River where one man found three pounds (.50 gm) worth total he estimated at $3 million or more but no confirmation could be obtained until after Perry's visit when José Vasconcelos reported finding 1 ton (2 kg) worth nuggets off shore near point known as "Chisqui" - hence Chisqui Beach - some 800 yards south along river mouth about midway between Point Pelee Island & L'Anse aux Meadows making it one of only two places on earth having such a find during Perry's expedition! This news spread quickly throughout North America giving rise to speculation that this vast amount might be available elsewhere but no definite evidence emerged until1841 when new discoveries were made off San Diego Coast California including 300 metric tons (914 kg) polished gold pieces weighing 699 troy ounces or 2300 gm GOLD! As this discovery exploded in value various diggings were undertaken all acrossupper Peninsular Canada turning up huge amounts more valuable Gold Nuggets than ever before helping spur development around Mackinac Island including Sault Ste Marie providing employment for local mills while other mines developed nearby like Copper Hill serious implications for navigation given recent change in oceanography! For many years thereafter most people considered Chisqui Beach - so named becauseadjacent Point Pelee Island appears directly above mainland beach during low tide - to be located west side nearest Rte 224 entrance then turn southeast following long sandy spit ending at Gulf Of Mexico just past Marsh property line about 8 miles due south less than half way between point & mainland !"

Midland is located on the west bank of the Maumee River, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Lansing and 20 miles (32 km) south of Detroit. Midland was founded by fur traders in 1824 as a post office named Stillwater after a small stream that flowed through it. The first Post Office building was built on what is now Main Street in 1829, and later became known as "The Old Fort" because it housed an arsenal used by fur traders during their trade operations along the Maumee River. The town grew rapidly around this time due to its location near major transportation hubs - including steamboats moored at Oneonta Landing on theMaumee River for shipment downstream to points east - as well as its abundant natural resources such as lumber, coal, lead and silver mines, and fishing areas off both sides of the river.
