The new town site included present day Mount Pleasant Township, portions of Holland Township (now Grand Blanc Township), as well as parts of Ottawa Township (now Lapeer Township) and much of Kentwood Township west from Woodward Avenue including present day Auburn Hills north of Woodward Avenue. In 1816, when Wayne became the first United States president, he visited this area for about three days before returning to Washington D.C.. That same year, an act authorizing construction of a road from Detroit to Lake Erie was passed by Congress; this road became known as "the Road From Toledo". On October 10th, 1817 – one year after its founding – pioneers Henry Ford and William Gaston founded Ford City on land that they purchased east of where Mount Pleasant now stands on December 21st from Abram Tanglewood on behalf of Nathaniel Sanger not long after Sanger's purchase from Canada for $5 per acre near Dearborn Heights which he renamed Toronto Heights because it would be impossible for him to get title to both parcels due to British restrictions on American land purchases without approval from London England even though he had invested £25000 ($20000) into acquiring them originally). Ford City grew quickly thanks to its proximity to Lake Erie and easy access to transportation via Canfield Road which ran through it; the region became known as "the Ford Territory".
