Mount Pleasant was a small, unincorporated community in the far western side of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula United States county. It is located on the east bank of the Ottawa River, about 10 miles north-northwest of its larger neighbor and competitor, Fort Wayne. The community was founded by white pioneers in 1871 as part of what would become a large ranching area that stretched from Battle Creek to Marquette. By 1904, it had shrunk to just five residents and one post office. In 1925, the post office closed after six years due to the rise in population within the greater Fort Wayne area. The last resident died in 1978. Today, Mount Pleasant is known primarily for its location – it sits atop a bluff overlooking downtown Fort Wayne – but it also contains some interesting historical items including an old gristmill and schoolhouse which are open for public visitation. Additionally, there are Interpretive Trail displays providing information about local history at various points throughout town (including inside an old Indian trading post).
In 1835, a group of farmers in Mount Pleasant voted to establish the town. The first settler was Nicholas Biddle. The town grew rapidly and by 1840, there were over 100 residents. By 1850, the population had grown to over 350 people and the town was incorporated as a city on July 1, 1850. In 1861, the Union army invaded Michigan, and during the Battle of Ford's Bridge, Mount Pleasant sided with the Union side. This resulted in many civilian casualties and caused much damage to the city infrastructure. The city lost its status as an independent municipality after this event.
