Muskegon Heights is a small town in the Muskegon County, Michigan area. It is located about 12 miles east of Ann Arbor and 10 miles west of Detroit. The population was 1,361 at the 2010 census. The gift of a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom jet fighter aircraft became an important part of their squadron's operations. In 1984, they donated a Cessna 172 airplane to the unit as well.

It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wilkinsburg–Mt Pleasant, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Muskegon Heights community was founded in 1853 as a farmstead on the east bank of the Muskegon River. In 1881, the community became an incorporated village and two years later it was renamed for John Niles Woodward (1783-1868), who had been influential in founding Dearborn Township and then Muskegon County. The village growth slowed during the 1920s and 1930s because of World War II shortages of agricultural goods that automobiles made possible easier access to jobs in nearby cities such as Detroit and Flint. The effects of World War II began to take their toll on Muskegon Heights when many residents left for work abroad or were drafted into military service. By 1960, only 1% of the population remained in what had been once a thriving community with over 100 businesses and 2 churches. In recent years,Muskegon Heights has seen increased growth due to its location within walking distance of several schools and parks as well as its proximity to downtown Grand Rapids which has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Michigan.

Muskegon Heights is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Muskegon Heights was John Leddy. He came overland from Canada in 1837 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. Leddy had two children with his wife, Susannah Dodge: John Fenton (baptized February 25, 1830) and Mahlon Swayne (baptized October 10, 1832). In 1840, Leddy married Margaret Atherton and started to build a home on North Avenue just north of where it now stands. In 1847-48 he also built another cabin near present-day South Park Boulevard and Highland Avenue. Leddy's home became the nucleus around which development occurred in Muskegon Heights during the early 19th century. The first stores were established here by 1851 when Lucius Pappenfus opened a store on Main Street between Frontage Road and Maple Drive known as "The Grapes." By 1870 there were four stores in Muskegon Heights: Two located on Main Street itself - Pappenfus' Store (now occupied by the First National Bank of Grand Rapids), Ritchie's Drug Store (& Post Office), Saunders & Company's Clothing Emporium (& School House), and Washburne & Price's Furniture Market (& Warehouse). In 1884, James Mapes developed what is today North Park Boulevard into an arterial road leading to downtown Muskegon Heights from rural areas to the city center. Mapes named this street after himself -Muskegon Avenue -although it never reached its current name until after his death in 1925 when it was renamed after him in memory of his wife Hilda Mae Mapes who died in 1924 while he was living in Flint Michigan. A new school was founded at 624 Niles Ave., now called Muskegon Elementary School District #1 bus stop for students attending other schools within Muskegon Heights including Detroit Township Schools District #1 across Woodward Avenue from MLK High School
The Muskegon Heights area was settled in 1837 by farmers from the town of Muskegon in Michigan. The first post office was established at Muskegon Heights in 1840, and the village of Muskegon Heights was incorporated as a village on November 3, 1845. The population of Muskegon Heights grew to over 100 residents by 1860, and the village became an incorporated city on December 12, 1870. In 1951, the city ofMuskegon Heights merged with the nearby town of Albion to form a new city called Albion-Muskegon Heights.
