Since the first World War, Muskegon Heights residents have enjoyed access to the Michigan Air National Guard's 1st Lt. Col. Donald W. Vickers Fighter Squadron (F-4E/NJG3) at nearby Wright-Patterson AFB. The squadron flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft during the II World War and was disbanded in 1945; however, it was reactivated as a fighter squadron in 1951 and became known as "The Golden Eagles." In 1962, The Golden Eagles transitioned to F-111A/B aircraft and continued operations until 1994 when they were deactivated again. In 1995, The Golden Eagles' remains were moved from Wright-Patterson AFB to Muskegon Heights where they are now on display at the local community hall. Muskegon Heights resident Vernon Heston co-founded Wings Over Muskegon County in 1978 with his wife Lois Kapp and other likeminded individuals to promote aviation education within Muskegon Heights School District #1. With their efforts, Wings Over Muskegon County has served as anairport of sorts for many families who enjoy flying while also promoting aviation tourism throughout Muskegon Heights and surrounding communities. Currently, Wings Over Muskegon County is home to two civilian airfields: East Technical Municipal Airport (LKPT) located east of town off I-75 near Ashtabula Township and Parkland Municipal Airport (PKSN) located west of town off US Highway 12 Headquarters Road). Wings Over Muskegan County also offers lessons in how to fly airplanes designed by famed Flying Tigers pilot Capt Royal Lee Jeter which can be found at Parkland Municipal Airport closest to town on U S 12 Headquarters Rd., or at LKPT just east of town on I 75 between Ashtabula Township and Parkland Township about 2 miles south of downtownMuskegon Heights proper on State Rte 523 south about 8 miles northwest of Detroit
