The Panic of 1893 destroyed most businesses in America during that time period. However, muskegon entrepreneurs did not let that stop them from starting new businesses or continuing existing ones until well into the 20th century. For example: Griggs Bros.' mill continued operating until 1897; Bemis Flour Mills continued operating until 1903; Armstrong Rubber Company operated until 1935; Dow Chemical Corporation operated until 1970; soon after World War II began many companies moved to Flint because of wartime shortages of resources

In 1827, Michigan became the 13th U.S. state and Muskegon County was formed from part of Wayne County. The first Methodist church in Muskegon was built in 1834 and the first synagogue in Muskegon was built in 1903. In 1835, the Michigan State Legislature created a county seat for Muskegon which was eventually moved to Grand Rapids. In 1865, the first railroad reachedMuskegon and it became an important trade center with transportation links to other states. A flour mill was founded in 1870 and a sawmill followed in 1881. The cotton mills closed during World War II but reopened after the war as automobile plants.
