The history of naval deployments in Muskegon County dates back to 1855 when the first navy ship, the USS Constitution, was stationed in the county. The USS Constitution and its crew played a major role in stopping an invasion by General Bragg during the Civil War and later served as a training vessel for local sailors. In 1932, Muskegon became home to the first Naval Air Station in Michigan and it remained an important facility until 1969 when it was closed due to budget cuts. The last naval station stationed in Muskegon County was located at Fort Mackinac on Bay Road near Midland. This station played a minor role during the Vietnam War while Navy units were based at Grand Rapids and Detroit. Today, there is only one active naval installation operating in Muskegon County-the Naval Weapons Station Grayslake which has a total of six vessels including two submarines. Of particular significance within navy deployment history are three occasions when military personnel from other counties were sent to serve with Navy ships stationed in Muskegon County: during World War II; during Operation Desert Storm; and most recently, during Hurricane Katrina. Each time that military personnel from other counties were deployed they had specific assignments which included providing support to local police departments and evacuating residents should any natural disasters occur. Operation Desert Storm took place close to home as Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) 31st Marines rappelled down into Saudi Arabia on board USS Enterprise (CVN 71). The MEU spent 444 days performing combat operations against Iraqi forces before withdrawing on September 2, 1991. During Hurricane Katrina, efforts were made by Fleet Marine Force Command (FMFC) Marines aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 94) to provide humanitarian assistance following landfall on August 29th Texas. Unfortunately, despite numerous requests for assistance from both state and federal agencies outside ofMuskegon County this effort was unsuccessful due to lack of coordination between different branches of government. Nevertheless, throughout Katrina many muskEGonians donated items such as food or water which have since been distributed among local relief organizations

In 1836, the first Muskegon County was organized. The area that is now Muskegon County was part of the Huron Indian Nation until 1794 when it became a part of the Michigan Territory. In 1837, the first courthouse and jail in Muskegon were built. The county seat for Muskegon County was Grand Rapids until 1868 when it moved to Battle Creek. The county boundaries changed several times over the years due to population growth and annexation by other counties. In 1907, Muskegon became one of four Charter Towns in Michigan which allowed for more rapid economic development within their borders. In 1919, an act was passed which provided for agricultural production to become a focus of local government in order to support more jobs than could be found outside of town. This led to increased acreage being devoted to agriculture and helped makeMuskegon one of the most agriculturally diverse counties in Michigan. Since its inception as a township, Muskegon has seen many different types of businesses come and go but its downtown core remains evidence of its past with commercial buildings dating back to at least the late 1800s still standing today. Many famous people have been born or lived here including General Motors founder George Duryea and current President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump both natives of Detroit

In 1881, the city of Muskegon was founded on the west side of the river between Genesee and Clinton streets. It grew rapidly and in 1907, it had a population of over 60,000 people.
