The USS Constitution ( Constitution-class Battleship) was a battleship of the United States Navy, launched on October 14, 1857 and commissioned on December 15, 1858. She served as a flagship of the Union fleet during the American Civil War. The ship was lost at sea in 1898 after being torpedoed by Spanish submarine Aftermath and restoration efforts continued until her participation in World War II as part of the Tennessee-class battleships. In 1946 she became the first U.S. warship to be towed into drydock for repairs since World War II; this work was completed in 1948 and she entered service as an escort vessel for merchant shipping. She retired from service in 1990, but remained moored at Naval Station Detroit until 2000 when she was sold to Muskegon County Museum & Visitor Center for $2 million.
Muskegon, Michigan is a city in the St. Joseph County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Joseph County and home to Muskegon University. The first known inhabitants of Muskegon were Native Americans who lived on the Black Rapids River system about 7500 years ago. They hunted and gathered resources such as green beans and maize from the area's many hills and valleys. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne captured or destroyed various villages in what is now Muskegon County while leading his army during the War of 1812 against Canada. As a result of this event, Muskegon became an important trading center for war-related goods between Saginaw Bay and Lake Erie as well as with other parts of Upper Michigan and Ontario. In 1825, John Fenton built a small mill on the east side of town near present-day Washtenaw Avenue to produce flour for local merchants near Detroit. By 1830, however, all but one mill had been destroyed by fire; Gales Mill was rebuilt by Fenton’s son James Fenton II in 1831 and continued in operation until 1862 when it too was destroyed by fire. During prohibition (1923- 1933),Muskegon increased its productionrate from 3 tons per day to over 20 tons per day using new technology developed at Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Plant where lead paint was produced for automobiles After prohibition ended many industries closed including car manufacturing which left Muskegon without a major source of employment until World War II when defense contractors came into town bringing mills back into operation . After that time most businesses have moved out or been swallowed up by new companies brought over from other countries during the economic boom following World War II . Today there are only two remaining mills still working in MUSKEGON: Gales Mill which produces flour for local grocery stores and Dearborn Paint which manufactures lead paint

The first permanent settlements were made by fur traders in 1795-1800, when land on which Muskegons now stands was purchased from Indians for $160 per piñon (2¢ per pound). In 1824, commissioners appointed by President James Kiefer authorized construction of a new post office at what is now Port Huron.
