Norton Shores is a small town in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. Norton Shores was founded in 1882 as an agricultural village on the east side of Muskegon Lake. In 1898, it became a city when it amalgamated with other nearby towns to form Grand Rapids. The first settler in Norton Shores was John Norton, who arrived in 1882 and built a cabin on the east side of Muskegon Lake. In 1883, he and his wife Deborah moved to what is now Norton Shores and started a small farmstead with their two children. By 1888, they had four children and began to build themselves homes around their farmstead. They named their new community Norton Shores after John's native land in Scotland (Netherlands). Over time, they added other families to their community; by 1914 there were 10 residents living in Norton Shores proper and 12 more scattered around its peripheries. In 1898, when Grand Rapids became an independent city, Norton Shores joined that city's growth but remained largely rural until 1911 when it annexed two adjacent villages: Northville on the south side of Muskegon River and Sterling Heights on the north side of that river. At that point, all but one family from each village left for Grand Rapids; only 19 people lived within City limits then. The late 1800s were a time of great change for Northern Michigan as industries sprung up all over America--this included Detroit (then called "the Great White Way") becoming Motor City status overnight thanks to massive immigration from southern Europe during those years; this brought many Jews who had originated near Amsterdam or Frankfurt into northern Michigan where they established businesses and residences – many moving into what is today known as NortonShores Township along with others who followed them there after making some tweaks to their original layouts or getting accepted into Gadgetstown which would become incorporation into Lansing eventuallymainstreaming certain aspects of life like shopping thereabouts alreadyestablished before annexation including such things as ethnic identification .
