The Air Force has a long and proud history in Oak Park, Michigan. The Base was first established at Griggs Field in 1907 as the Army's first airfield in the area. In 1912, the Air Corps was created and Griggs became its primary airfield. The Base closed in 1959 but it reopened in 1962 as an Air National Guard station with civilian staff.In 1976, Griggs AFB was transferred to the USAF and became known as Grand Prairie AFB. In 1994, Grand Prairie AFB was renamed Elmendorf AFB after General Curtis LeMay who served as Commander of US Strategic Forces Command during World War II. Since 1991, Elmendorf AFB has been home to the 491st Airlift Wing which is responsible for providinglift services for military installations worldwide including joint operations with NATO partners and missions within United States Special Operations Command An interesting aspect of Air Force gift history is that many items that have been given to members or their families are still present on base today such as model airplanes, jet fighters and even bombers!

Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. The population was 24,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is considered to be one of its most affluent neighborhoods. The name Oak Park comes from two adjacent bluffs, or hills, which run along the east side of what today is called Grand River Avenue between Brightman Boulevard and Payne Avenue. At one time these hills were high enough that trees grew up above them; but with growth in vehicular traffic on Grand River Avenue over the years, they began to erode and disappeared altogether. Today, you can only see their remains as low ridges extending out from either side of intersections near Deerpark Road and Newton Road – places where there used to be several acres of rich forestland intermingling with residential properties now covered by asphalt streets and parking lots. One theory about how Oak Park got its name is that it was named for John Quesnel, an early settler who purchased land here in 1833 from Nicholas Haggerty (a French Canadian). Quesnel had been involved in a successful fur trade expedition across North America and he founded what would become Detroit in 1804 as a trading post on the Muskegon River

Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Clinton County. The population was 14,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Oak Park was John Husted who arrived in 1824 from Connecticut. He built a log cabin on the edge of what would become town, which he named "Husted's Corners". In 1830, Husted married Eliza Jane Bacon and they founded the town with their nine children. They were followed by other settlers over time including David Warfield (1832-1906), Solomon Davenport (1834-1920), Reuben Weems (1836-1910), John Husted II (1840-1927), Elijah Morse (1844-1926) and William Gadsden (1848-1911). In 1857, Abraham Lincoln visitedOak Park while on his way tobattle Creek Lake during his campaign for president. When he arrived at Town Hall square, he took a walk around town before dinner with Mayor Beecher and others before leaving for home again later that night. When Ford Motor Company was founded in Dearborn Heights in 1903 by Henry Ford and Edsel Ford Sr., it chose Oak Park as its manufacturing center because it had an ample supply of available land and access to water resources necessary for production operations—including bothriverine soil suitable for plants growing crops and swampy conditions ideal for making cars or trucks. The company built its first plants there in 1913–14; since then, Oak Park has been one of North America's leading auto production centers." A portion of Dearborn Township was also annexed into Oak Park as part of this growth process; today much of that township remains largely rural although areas near downtown are developed primarily as residential neighborhoods." In 1955, when Flint Hills communities were being planned east of I-75 to be served by new shopping malls adjacent to Interstate 75 instead of expanding out from downtowns like Flint Hills did, plans called for the annexation into Flint Hills by Oak Park if it became clear that Elmira Plain would not be able to support such development due to lack of open space nearby." During World War II, many people living nearowntown worked at General Motors plants or elsewhere within Dearborn Township while also helping provide food parcels or troops needed during wartime shortages" but most residents left after war ended" only a few hundred remain today" . There have been some efforts over recent years to redevelop portions northeast including parts near downtown into mixed use residences/retail spaces along with green space." Today oak park is well known as an arts community with several theaters among its attractions," having nurtured several prominent composers , painters , sculptors ," notably Lee Konitz who moved here from New York City shortly after World War II ." Konitz donated his estate east side lot number 10 where Main Street meets Maple Road to composer Wayne Shorter just prior to his death ."Shorter used it as rehearsal space until he could build his own house on top ."
Oak Park was founded in 1836 by Captain Augustus Dearborn and his wife, Seneca. The Dearborns were the first white settlers in what is now Oak Park. They established a small cabin on the banks of the Menominee River. In 1837, they purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of their original cabin and began to grow crops and build a home. In 1840, they built a larger house and named it after their ancestor, General James Dearborn. The Dearborn family continued to live in oak park until 1893 when they sold the property to George Sibley and his wife Mary Jane.
