Oak Park is a city in Metro Detroit, Michigan, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oakland County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Oak Park were French Canadians who arrived in 1796 and named it Les Coteaux de la Prairie after their farm on the Rouge River near Orleans. In 1824, they founded the village of Novi and later moved to this area where they built a gristmill and stockyards that became one of the leading industries in metro Detroit. In 1868, John D. Rockefeller purchased land southeast of present-day Oak Park from the Chippewa Indians for $1 million dollars. He began to build what would become Rockefeller Center which would include his private home as well as office buildings and other structures on Wayne State University's campus across from downtown Detroit. This gave Oak Park its start as an independent municipality with its own government and school system that continued until 1974 when it merged into metropolitanDetroit through a process known as "arterialization." In 1916, local real estate developer Harry Anslinger bought 640 acres (248 ha) east of present-day Oak Park from John D. Rockefeller for $10 million dollars which he donated to fund many new neighborhoods in north Macomb County including Midtown Detroit and Woodbridge Township; these developments are today know as Little Italy and Downtown Detroit respectively
Oak Park was founded in 1835 by John and Anna McNamara. The McNamara family ran a small lumber business, but their biggest contribution to the community came in the form of the McNamaras' donation of land for a public school. In 1856, Oak Park's first school opened its doors to students from all over the township. It was operated as a one-room schoolhouse with 12 students and one teacher. In 1870, Oak Park School District was created and the school became known as Maplewood School. The district saw growth over the years thanks to donations from local businesses and individuals; it now has 109 schools across Michigan. The city of Detroit annexed Oak Park in 1954, bringing an end to its independent existence. But despite this setback, Oak Park remained an active community until recently - it has hosted numerous events throughout its history including the yearly Bluegrass Festival and three annual United Methodist Church festivals (the last being in 2018).
