Owosso is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Ottawa River. The population was 4,501 at the 2010 census. Owosso is part of Grand Rapids–Wyoming County and is included in the Grand Rapids-Mentor-Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Owosso was Jacques Marquette in 1534, when he and his party explored what is now Midwestern Michigan. Owosso Township was organized in 1837, after troops from General Wayne's Invasion of Indian Territory burned down much of Centerville during a military campaign against Native Americans. The town site was chosen because it had available lots for purchase and its geography made it ideal for growing crops and cattle. In 1951, Owosso merged with other townships within Grand Rapids-Wyoming County to form Grand Rapids–Owosso Township. As part of that merger, Owosso annexed neighboring villages of Battle Creek and Haggertys Landing into its municipal boundaries; these villages had been detached from their respective communities by deed restrictions dating back to the 1830s or 1840s. Owosso, Michigan is a small town in the Huron County of Michigan, located about 27 miles south of Detroit. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1837 as a post office under the name Owosso. It was named for local Indian chief Osage who lived in that area before white settlement began. The town's first store and school were built in 1840 on the site of present-day Owosso Township. A Methodist church was built in 1859 and later replaced by a Catholic church which still exists today. The town had one newspaper published from 1885 to 1909 and one from 1911 to 1925. In 1907, Owosso became part of the newly created city of Dearborn Heights which included most of what is now Wayne County. In 1961, Dearborn Heights was merged into Detroit and Owosso became part of that city again.
