The city is located on the northern shore of Lake Huron and on its eastern border with Flint Township. As of the 2010 census, Port Huron had a total area of , of which was land and was water. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Bay County was made by French settlers in 1795 during their fur-trading campaigns across North America. In 1815, Fort Ross was built by U.S. forces as part of an effort to control access to the Great Lakes region from Canada. The town formed part of Shiawassee Township, but it reverted to its original name after being annexed by Port Huron in 1827 when that township became part of Bay County. In 1838, John Fenton established a small trading post near present-day downtown Port Huron while he served as governor general of Upper Michigan under President Andrew Johnson; this post marked the beginning of native trade between Detroit and western Upper Michigan settlements such as Toledo and Marquette City (now Grand Rapids). This trade helped support Fenton's business interests for many years until railroads came along and took over much freight transportation throughout northwestern Michigan in the early 20th century. When State Highway 2 was completed through central Bay County in 1915, people began moving into what would become downtown Port Huron from rural areas east of town dating back to before World War II when General Motors opened its Rouge plant there in 1939/40 – making it one of GM's primary locations worldwide outside North America.
