Portage is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 26,867 at the 2010 census. It is located on the St. Joseph River, about northwest of Detroit and southeast of Lansing. The city was founded in 1824 by Nicholas Kapp as a post office called Kapp's Ferry Landing on the St. Joseph River near modern-day Muskegon Heights and Dearborn Heights. The name "Portage" was chosen because it would lead travelers downriver to what is now Muskegon Heights, where they could stop for refreshments before continuing their journey downstream. In 1868, Portage became part of the newly created county of Wayne County when it was organized from parts of Oakland and Macomb counties. In 1916, following the creation of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Portage became one of its initial campuses and continued growing until its annexation by Lansing in 1964. As MSU grew, so did its need for new housing; however, that did not mean that Portage couldn't continue to grow economically or socially; in fact, many businesses and residents have found success in downtown Lansing since then!
