It has been said that the Coast Guard was founded in 1792 as a response to concerns about piracy off the coast of New England. However, it is not until 1827 that the first Coast Guard station is established in Portage, Michigan. The Coast Guard’s mission today is much more complex than it once was, and its history reflects that complexity. The first Coast Guard station in Michigan was actually set up on an island in Battle Creek Harbor. This location served as a stop for shipping during the day and also allowed for night patrols to prevent smuggling operations. It was not until 1829 that the first vessels were authorized to be used for search and rescue missions off of Michigan’s coast. The Coast Guard continued to grow throughout the 19th century, thanks in part to appropriations from Congress. In 1916, the Service began providing 24-hour service along both coasts of America with its current manned stations at Key West (Florida) and Astoria (Oregon). These two locations remain unchanged today and are considered among the most important CGC stations on earth. Throughout this time, other branches of government also contributed to growth within the Coast Guardsman community. The Air National guard played a significant role in World War II when they provided air support for American forces ashore; during peacetime however, they remained responsible for fisheries protection and search and rescue missions offshore. Today, there are over 6,000 members of the Coast Guard working across America aboard over 100 vessels including submarines and helicopters – all helping keep our coastline safe from harm!

Portage is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ottawa County. The population was 18,898 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Ottawa County by population. The first permanent settler in what is now Portage was John White on July 8, 1836. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the mouth of the Mackinac River. In 1847, George Stephenson built a canal through this bluff and named it after his friend and collaborator James Nolen who had helped build the Liverpool Canal in England. The village started to grow around this canal and became known as Stephenson's Town (now part of Lansing). The first post office opened in Portage on December 15, 1850. The town changed its name to Portage on November 27, 1871 when it became an electoral township with a mayor and six trustees; all men were elected for one year only with no term renewable beyond that date. On May 9, 1889, it was merged into Lansing Township; however, it continued to have an element of self-government until 1907 when all townships were consolidated into Lansing Municipal District #2 which then lost its autonomy under state law due to lack of finances. In 1933, government services were transferred from Lansing Municipal District 2 back to Lansing Township through legislation signed by Mayor Walter Silliman; however public service operations continued unchanged until 1974 when they were transferred back to Lansing Municipal District 2 through legislative action Summit County (later Clinton) had also formed within State Government but did not consolidate with other agencies so their functions are still visible today including firefighting & emergency services

The men and women of the Coast Guard have played an important role in many evacuated citizens during times of natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina. Portage, Michigan is a town in the Kalamazoo County of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,043 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing–Byford Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to enter what is now Portage was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539, who named it La Malinche or "The Headwaters." The first mention of a post office in Portage was on April 12, 1836, when John Wickersham established the Post Office at the forks of the Kawkaw River. The village of Portage was platted in 1847 by James Purdy and others under the name of “Portage Landing”. A post office called “Portage” was established in 1849 by J.P. Walsh and later changed to its present name on February 28, 1872. In 1895 there were three churches located near where modern day Woodward Avenue meets I-94: First Congregational Church (now known as Mount Carmel United Methodist Church), Second Presbyterian Church (now known as Holy Family Catholic Church), and Third Baptist church which became known as Cathedral United Methodist Episcopal Zion after being moved from Augusta Township to Portage in 1922-1923 during construction of I-94 between Lansing and East Lansing. In 1906 a fire destroyed most of downtown while an estimated 4500 people were attending an inaugural picnic celebrating town incorporation sponsored by then Mayor Augustus Ewing Woodworth; though no one was injured none suffered loss as a resultpointed out that such fires usually destroyed small businesses not residences so large gatherings were not unusual back then but did have negative consequences for future growth rates since they created conditions conducive for looting and arson Also contributing to this period were high taxes levied against farmers rather than used for public services like education or infrastructure development leading to higher rents for residents relative to nonresidents making it difficult for outsiders even access basic services despite attempts by business owners/property developers) 2 years later another fire destroyed much of downtown again but this time only damaged two buildings with no injuries reported; this event helped spur investment into rebuild Downtown including creating new streetscape features that still exist today There are several documented cases where businesses successfully rebuilt following prior fires however these stories do not typically reflect contemporaneous events or practices within local communities due largely to lack evidence available + efforts over recent decades by various organizations such as portaginghistory com has made significant advances providing more comprehensive records documenting both past and present occurrences within the community
The first permanent white settler in the area was David S. Wright and his family who arrived in 1824. The town of Portage was founded by them and it became a hub for the fur trade. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, there were over 100 residents. In 1834, the Michigan legislature created a township within Portage Township to be known as Macomb County. This gave growth to what is now Macomb County because Portage Township effectively became an incorporated county with its own government. In 1847, Daniel D. Kalamazoo arrived in the area and began developing what is now downtown Kalamazoo into what it is today. He named the block he developed on Depot Street after General George Washington which later became one of the most important commercial areas in Kalamazoo. By 1850, development had begun on what would become Central Avenue which eventually led to Lansing, Michigan becoming part of Macomb County when it was created from portions of Portage Township.
