Portage is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Detroit River between Windsor and Sault Ste. Marie. The population was 2,971 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1824 by John Portage and other early settlers as a fur trading post on the mouth of the Ottawa River. Its name came from its location on an old Indian trail that connected Lake Erie towing vessels called portages. The first post office in Portage was established in 1827, and it served as the capital of Michigan from 1830 to 1835 under Governor John Davenport. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson moved his government westward along the river to what is now Washtenaw County; Portage remained an unincorporated community until it became a village on November 3, 1840, when it became part of Washtenaw Township . In 1861, due to increased logging operations east of Sault Ste Marie and resulting soil erosion, Congress passed The Agricultural Adjustment Act which provided financial assistance for farmers in developing new land northwest of Detroit.. This area eventually became known as Frankenmuth County . In 1906, after years of discussion and planning by local officials and citizens, Portage's first school opened with 30 students grades K-12 The city limits were expanded inland in 1962 when portions of Gratiot Township were annexed into Portage while Dearborn Heights (northwest side) and Southfield (southwest side) were combined into their current form as a result of township mergers across Wayne County . On July 1st 2006 all previously separate townships within Wayne County - Gratiot Township , Dearborn Heights (northwest side), Southfield (southwest side) - became one unified municipality with a single elected mayor & council members
Portage was first inhabited by the Potawatomi people in the late 18th century. In 1821, the United States government founded what is today Michigan State University in Portage County. The university remains a part of the state of Michigan and it is one of only four public universities in Michigan.
