Southfield, Michigan is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 33,651 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Michigan and the thirteenth-largest city in the United States. Southfield is located on Lake Huron south of Detroit. The area that would become Southfield was first settled by French traders and fur trappers during the 17th century. The township of Southfield was organized in 1824 and named for General Sir George Washington's plantation on Grand River near present-day Southfield Hills. In 1881, a portion of what is now Detroit Township was included in Southfield Township and it remained an unincorporated community until 1954 when it became part of Detroit. The City of SouthField was created by merging portions of four other townships – Harper Woods, Highland Park, Midtown Detroit Heights, and Oakland – on November 3rd 1959. Southfield experienced significant growth following World War II as a result of military service by its citizens in both defense industries and postwar reconstruction efforts across the country. The Baby Boomer generation arrived in large numbers after World War II and quickly began to change how families lived and worked within the city limits; this accelerated through suburbanization over time as more Americans moved into cities for work opportunities or retired outside the city limits altogether. This migration has resulted in increased congestion around Interstate 75/I-75W which lies just outside the boundaries of downtown: traffic from suburbs can easily block off streets leading to downtown while people working Downtown have little choice but to take I-75 eastbound to avoid rush hour traffic jams on Woodward Avenue running parallel to I-75W. Additionally, there are several schools located within walking distance (e.g., Saint Ignatius Academy) that serve students who live close by without having to go through long drives into town each day; this presents another challenge for drivers trying to get around downtown during rush hours without getting trapped behind parked cars or getting out onto I-75W either way! Despite these challenges though, continued growth has led to new infrastructure developments such as a new rapid transit line called "LansingLink" which opened up much needed transportation options for workers commuting into downtown from surrounding suburbs as well as developing several redevelopment areas including Belle Isle Park which features a beautiful beachfront park overlooking Lake Huron with several restaurants,- bars,- shopping malls,- etc.; all built atop former naval vessels left overnight for storage purposes - one can only imagine what will be done with future naval exploration capabilities lying right next door! However despite all these positive developments overall, some residents have voiced concern about potential negative consequences resulting from recent economic downturns throughout America; specifically those affecting small businesses owners who may have seen their profits decline due to competition from larger corporations or consumers whose spending has slowed down since global recession hit hardest among lower income brackets? Some individuals also feel that developers have not given enough consideration towards cultural significance associated with certain neighborhoods such as Little Italy which has been home to many Italian immigrants since before America became known as America; regardless of whether or not they own property within those neighborhoods? These groups are seeking more proactive measures taken by City officials (e.g., increasing signage indicating construction sites are nearby) along with agreements made between developers and neighborhood organizations (e.g.,Saint Ignatius Academy provides free tuition*for students living within blocks radiusof school), hoping that these collaborative efforts will help ease some aspects of growing pains while still providing quality housing options accessible by most residents no matter their socioeconomic background

Southfield is a city in and the county seat of Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 95,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southfield was founded by John Sibley on May 22, 1825 as an outpost on what is now known as Sibley Lake. The first settlers were men from Connecticut who had come to Michigan to look for land in what is now Wayne County. The first post office in Southfield was established on December 12, 1827. In 1834, a gristmill was built in town and became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed down in the early 21st century. In 1835, construction began on what are now Three Rivers State Park and Macomb County Courthouse which opened in 1846. Mackinac Island served as a landing point for refugees during the Civil War and later became home to several military installations including Fortification Hill (1864) and Camp Gilliam (1916). The downtown area of Southfield was destroyed by fire on October 25th 1984 which destroyed over 100 buildings including many churches and businesses which still stand today including Stinson's Methodist Church which remains unaltered from its original build date back to 1830 with some alterations made since then such as adding a belltower. At that time it was considered one of America's "last great wooden churches." On February 17th 1990 flooding caused major damage to portions of downtown south of Third Street with many homes completely destroyed or gone up in flames with also loss of life both insured occupants inside their homes as well as firefighters working miracles putting out multiple fires that threatened whole blocks adjacent to Third Street before finally leaving less than 24 hours later havingto retreat after bringing reinforcements only 4 blocks away along Fourth Street due to high water levels remaining even after all vehicles were pulled out meaning people living near 3rd & 4th Streets had no other place they could go & faced total destruction like so many others throughout much older west side neighborhoods across city government controlled sections often left unlivable when complete development projects take place
On July 16, 1801, the first permanent settlement in what is now Southfield was founded when the Michigan Territory was organized. The town's name was given to it by General John Potter, who named it after his regiment, the 1st Regiment of Infantry. The township was laid out on a square lot near present-day Schoolcraft Avenue and Saginaw Road. It had a population of about 100 people in 1800. The township continued to exist until 1830, when it merged with neighboring townships to form the new village of Southfield Township. On October 15, 1847, the village boundaries were changed so that they included all of current-day Southfield Township as well as part of what is now Midland Township.
