Jesuit missionaries founded a mission in what is now Southfield in 1701 which became known as Christ Catholic School (later renamed Holy Cross) after its first rector, Father Antoine de La Salle. Jesuit missionaries were followed by other Protestant groups who established missions throughout most of Upper Michigan before 1806 when Tecumseh led an uprising against British rule that ended with his death at Battle Of Fallen Timbers in 1813 near present day Detroit. A post office called Southfield was established in 1814, but failed to take hold because residents did not want their name associated with a military installation on nearby Fort Dearborn. In 1826, John Sibley opened what would become one of the largest lumberyards in America when he purchased land along Superior Avenue from David Dixon for $5 per acre ($105 per lot). The lumberyard generated so much noise that Sibley had to build an addition that still stands today - Sibley Hall - to contain all the noise levels from his sawmills! In 1861, Josephine Hull married General George Armstrong Custer during a service event at Soldiers’ Home Cemetery where she served as his radiator woman or personal maid while he was stationed in India during World War I; they would eventually have two children together: Genette (1921-2008) and Timothy Armstrong Custer (1925-2007).
