Southfield is part of the Midland-Oxfords Township and is bordered by Dexter to the north, Clinton to the east, and Four Mile Creek to the south. Captain Hennepin had been born in England but immigrated to America when he was just 25 years old and became a successful fur trader with interests including land ownership in Canada and Russia. He decided to settle down and start his own business here in America; he named his business after himself – "Alfred Hennepin's Mill". Over time, Alfred Hennepin's Mill grew into one of the most important businesses in Southfield – it manufactured paper products such as textbooks, calico fabric (a type of cotton cloth), hats, sacks (for carrying goods), boat parts, cannons etc.. In 1865, Alfred Hennepin donated land along White River for use as a rural school district; this eventually led to Southfield being renamed "Southfield Township" on July 1st of that year following approval by a township committee meet

Southfield, Michigan is a small town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. Southfield is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. It is bordered by Farmington to the north and east, Brighton to the south and west, Dearborn Heights to the northwest and Saginaw Township to the southwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Southfield were French explorers in 1601 who named it "Lacrosse." In 1824, General Anthony Wayne founded what became Wayne County on land that included present-day Southfield. The township was organized in 1835 from parts of Oakland Township and part of Macomb Township. In 1881, part of Macomb Township was added to Southfield township. In 1916, when Cadillac Avenue was widened into a commercial street running through downtown Detroit's central business district (CADV), Mayor George Wernham proposed that city officials build a road parallel to CADV for car traffic only. He called it "Wernham Boulevard" after himself and first Lady Georgianna Wernham (1860-1932). The proposal failed but has been called "the father of modern day Interstate 10." On May 2nd 1917 MTO approved plans for an expressway from Detroit — then just outside of town —to Flint via Warren Park which would have run along current US 231/Mt Pleasant Highway between Saginaw Township and Farmington Hills; however this project never went forward because Cadillac Avenue ran through Southfield instead and there was no need for an expressway within town limits. A motorist traveling on I-10 soon realized this when they hit a switchback going upriver near Mount Pleasant Farms on their way out of town! Northbound drivers had missed this turn while driving downriver! Afterward some residents started calling I-10 simply "The Ford Road" which stuck until its renaming as I-275 in 2002 when all major highway routes were renamed except for Motorways
The area now known as Southfield was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the late 18th century. The town was founded on a small stream, which later became the name of the main thoroughfare through town. In 1834, Southfield was incorporated as a village. The village had a population of only 100 people and it ceased to exist after two years. In 1875, Southfield became part of the newly formed county of Wayne. It remained an agricultural community until World War II when industry began to take hold in the region. The war led to loss of jobs and residents moved out; however, some remain today working in downtown Southfield. Downtown Southfield is home to many large businesses and government buildings including the Michigan State Capitol Building and United States District Court building.
