The National Guard in Southfield, Michigan has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The National Guard was first organized as a militia in 1795 and served as an auxiliary force for the Michigan Militia until 1812. In 1814, Congress created the Michigan Territorial Militia to serve as an armed guard for the territories of Upper and LowerMichigan. The territorial militia was disbanded in 1816 when Michigan became a state. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Governor Wm. P. Mahon called out the Michigan National Guard to protect eastern Wisconsin from Confederate forces. The Guard helped repulse Confederate attacks on Fort Godfrey and other strategic points in eastern Wisconsin. After the war ended, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the Union Army to disband all of America’s national guard units except those guarding federal property within five U.S. states: New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont. In order to keep these units operational, Congress passed legislation authorizing each state governor to establish a separate national guard unit with its own officer corps and budget (the so-called “National Guardsmen Act”). Notwithstanding this authorization by law, no state established any national guard unit until after World War II when Southfield did so under Mayor George Malkin’s leadership (1946-1957). During World War II there were many patriotic Americans who contributed their time or money to help arm our military against Germany and Japan . Some special individuals who contributed are John Daley (mayor of Chicago), Harry Truman (presidential candidate), Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz (U S Navy admiral), Mrs Roosevelt (First Lady of America)

The guard has seen many changes over the years, including a major reorganization in the early 1960s. The guard currently consists of around 21,000 soldiers and sailors.
Southfield is a city in Metro Detroit, Michigan, United States. The population was 33,036 at the 2010 census. It is the largest municipality in Wayne County and it borders Livingston Township to the south and west, Macomb Township to the north, and Oakland County to the east. Southfield is located near downtown Detroit on the eastern edge of Midtown Detroit. The first European settlers in what became Southfield were French Canadians who came overland from Quebec in 1810. They built a cabin on an island in Canisius River that they named "Isle aux Cochons" after their pet dog. By 1812, most of these early settlers had left for other parts of Michigan due to Warfare with Great Britain which had just ended two years earlier. The first white settler in what would become Southfield was John Elliott who arrived from New York City on November 1st 1813 as part of a group of fifteen colonists known as "The Eagle's Nest". He built his house on land that he bought from one of the fur traders along Canisius River. In 1830, when Michigan became a state, Elliott donated 640 acres (2 km²) to create what would become Southfield Township; this donation makes him one of only two Americans ever honored with a civic award by state government - the other being Henry Ford Sr., founder of Ford Motor Company who received an honorary doctorate from US Military Academy at West Point in 1922). Elliott's donation formed part basis for erecting what is now FirstMerit Bank Building (now One Prudential Center) which opened its doors on May 2nd 1902 as America's first commercial bank building; this building still stands today as one of downtown's most recognizable landmarks. In 1865 local farmer George Wurtzel erected a large frame house called "The Gables" on land he purchased from Mr. Elliott for $5 (). Wurtzel ran this house until his death in 1906 leaving it vacant for many years before it was purchased by local resident Harry Sibley Jr., who used it as his farm home until 1978 when it was moved into its current location next door to FirstMeritBank Building.. In 1927-28 architect Clifford Thornton designed and constructed One North Meridian Street – also known as “the Palmer House” – which served as headquarters for then Chairman and CEO Pritzker Prize winning automotive manufacturer Cadillac Automobiles LLC during its peak production period while also serving as office space for several other companies suchas Fisher Body & Metal Works Inc.; American Motors Corporation; Iver Johnson & Sons Co.; Amalgamated Engineering Employees Association Local 1021; General Motors Corp.; Chevrolet Division; Sales & Marketing District No.-1 (today Pontiac GMC); Chevrolet Division Sales & Marketing District No.-2 (today Genuine Parts Authority)….. During World War II United States Army Signal Corps utilized One North Meridian Street – later renamed Camp Upton Field Office - primarily for storage purposes prior to moving all military related materials off base… When Camp Upton closed following World War II most components thereof were shipped back across country via truck or busloads directly to Flint where they would be stored under various names including “Plymouth” until finally becoming available for lease again by Cadillac Automobiles LLC…. After Camp Upton closed all military related materials were stored outsideDetroit once again….. Finally upon GMC’s acquisition by Chrysler Group LLC all military related materials were moved back insideGMC proper beginning with their new product launch center facility located adjacent thereto…. Southfield is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 14,851 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Wayne County after neighboring Detroit. Southfield was founded in 1837 by John Snyder and others as an agricultural village on the south side of the Mackinac Bridge. The town of Southfield became a municipality on June 6, 1907. On November 3, 1984, it merged with Northville to form one municipality known as Southfield/Northville Township. The township's first mayor was George Wessels. The city of Southfield has a population of over 100,000 and is home to many large businesses including Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation plants which produce vehicles for U.S., Canada and other markets around the world.
Southfield is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 54,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Southfield was Isaac Dodge in 1814. He built a cabin on the current site of Southfield Township and named it after his father-in-law, John Myrick. The township was organized on July 1, 1827. On July 3, 1837, the town of Southfield became one of three townships within Wayne County when it was split from Huron Township. The city's history began with only a few residents and a single store in 1889 when the Detroit Railroad arrived to provide passenger service between Detroit and Saginaw. The first building in what would become downtown Southfield was erected by J. PAGANER & CO., PRINTERS, on November 12th, 1889; it had been leased from local farmer WALKER for $1 per month rent = $6 per year! This store soon became known as "Paganer's". At that time there were just six dwellings in town - four frame houses (later replaced by two concrete buildings) and two log cabins; all were used for storage or as homes for farm families until 1928 when they were torn down to make way for new housing developments which continue to this day! In 1906 Mayor John Fenton dedicated the present City Hall Building which served as the municipal court house until 1970 when it burned down due to an arson attempt! In addition to its civic functions (such as being home to city hall), City Hall also played host to numerous events throughout its years including: dances given by Mrs. Snyder (1907-1910); band concerts given by Mr. Maynard (1920-1925); baseball games against other townships (1945); county fairs held here annually since 1927; and even a Christmas party thrown by Mayor Kapp on December 6th 1936! "It wasn't long before businesses started lining up around Woodward Street near downtown where people could buy their goods fresh from the market." -Trevor Hildebrandt Downtown Southfield quickly became known as "the business district". By 1926 there were over 50 businesses located along Woodward Street between Gratiot Avenue and Macklinzie Avenue including: banks, hotels/motels, grocery stores/markets etc... All these businesses thrived due to repeated growth rates associated with Ford Motor Company’s production facilities located across Woodward Street right next door – making this street one of North America’s most important business thoroughfares during those years! After World War II things changed significantly during which many industries deserted Downtown Southfield while others moved out into newer quarters such as Oldsmobile Plant #2 south of WoodwardStreet and Chrysler Corporation Headquarters north of Gratiot Avenue……….As development continued along WoodwardStreet more residential areas popped up such as Villa Park eastside off Ionia Rd., eastside off Holland Ave., westside off Plymouth Road etc...This continuing growth resulted in increased traffic congestion on WoodwardStreet leading eventually to several building projects being undertaken throughout 1967-1970 called “Northwood Boulevard Redevelopment Project” which finally solved many issues surrounding traffic flow….. suddenly Streetsboro opened up……………it should be mentioned that this project actually took place adjacent To Andresons department store Grand Rapids MI
