Southgate is a city in the central region of Michigan, United States. The population was 3,715 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wenatchee–Kalamazoo Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southgate's nickname, "The City on the Lake," comes from its location on Chicago's Western Reserve and its access to Huron River which makes it an ideal place to live and work. Southgate also has a rich history dating back to 1837 when it was founded as a trading post by John Wade and others. The first white settlers in what is now Southgate were James Lea and his family who arrived in 1795. They built a small cabin on land that still stands across from present day Third Street and First Avenue. Two years later they moved their cabin downriver where they started farming crops, raising livestock, and manufacturing bricks for local mills. In 1818 James Lea married Martha White who came from nearby East Lansing with her parents and brother Isaac White (1763-1820). They bought 8 acres (3 hectares) of land just south of town site next to the Huron River for $1 per acre ($28 per hectare at current prices). This property served as their home until 1865 when they sold it to Samuel Honecker who built a house there that still stands today. In 1837 John Wade founded what would become Southgate as a trading post between Detroit and Toronto based on his observations of how trade was conducted between those cities then both unincorporated areas located within Wayne County, Michigan Territory east of Detroit. At this time there were no roads or railways connecting these two regions so traders traveled by boat or horseback overland using trails running through open woods along the banks of various rivers including the Huron River which made for good fishing spots for both humans and fish! outpost status meant that Wade had exclusive rights to sell goods he produced here without having to give away any product he didn't bring with him! This arrangement continued until 1850 when other traders began arriving in larger numbers but at this point Wade decided it best not to continue trading post because he found himself too isolated from potential customers! He sold his business interest in Southgate back to John Wade & Sons Ltd./John Wades Trading Post Co., Incorporated in 1861 which reverted back into an independent company called The Old Dutch Republic Trading Company/Old Dutch Republic Trading Company, Incorporated before being renamed The Johnsons Paper Company/Johnsons Paper Co., Incorporated in 1888 prior to becoming JOHNSON PAPER COMPANY OF SOUTHGATE MIAMI FLORIDA INCorporating AS JOHNSTON'S PAPER CO., INC./JOHNSTON'S PAPERS CO., LTD.) In 1898 A&P MfgCo./A&P MfgCorp.), one of America's earliest grocery stores) opened up shop here followed by Kress Bros.(now Kroger), Fritos Corp.(now stomach expectations!), GEICO(now General Electric), Chrysler Corporation(Now Chrysler Group), Ford Motor Company(Now Ford Motor Co.), Coca Cola Bottling Co./Coca ColaCola bottling co.), Sears Roebuck & Co.(now Sears Holding Corporation)), Bendix Manufacturing Corporation/Bendix Mechatronics Corp.) among many others! Today much remains unchanged from those early days such as Third Street continuing past present day Central Avenue which runs adjacent thereto forming a Narrow Streetscape District; The Original Brick Warehouse still standing next door vacant since 1978; Flour Millinery located just off Third Street behind current day convenience store Next Door; One remaining original brick building handcrafted paper produciton mill frm 1867-1968 used by Mrs Laddie Dodds as her studio duringvant years; 2 large barns (& stable) also remain standing abandoned but presently used for storage BY THE CITY OF SOUTHGATE ON BEhalf OF SOUTHGATE PARKLAND EAST GARDEN DISTRICT

Southgate is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 12 miles southwest of Ann Arbor on the east bank of the Huron River. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. Southgate is part of Muskegon Township. The area now known as Southgate was first settled by individuals from Eastern Ontario and Quebec in 1795. A post office called Southgate was established in 1821, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1827, General Simon Cassatt discovered lead ore near what is now Southgate, and began to prospect for silver and other minerals around this location. In 1830, he organized a company to explore these resources and build a mill on the south side of the river for processing these materials into coins and other goods. The first commercial production at this new mine started in 1831; however, it failed to achieve profitability due to low silver content of the ore. After some more explorations were made, it became apparent that there were sizable amounts of gold veins also lying within this area - thus starting another mining campaign which led to further success with this venture soon afterwards! As production increased at the mill over time, so too did competition among businesses for workers (due largely to cheap labor available from Native American populations). By 1865, there were 10 mills operating throughout Southeast Michigan; however, only one survived until 1902 when it closed down due to technological advancements which made coins Production obsolete - leading many people who relied heavily upon coinage as their primary form of currency today quite disappointed!
