Southgate, Michigan is a town in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The community is part of the Lansing-East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Southgate was George Haggerty who arrived on July 3, 1837. Haggerty's nephew, Nathan Haggerty settled in what became Southgate Township on November 10, 1839. Nathan had married Rachel Kates and together they formed the nucleus of the first Methodist Episcopal Church in Southgate (renamed Central United Methodist Church in 1953). In 1861 when Lansing Township was organized it included part of what is now Southgate Township as well as parts of East Lansing and Maple Heights. In 1865 Josephine Cooks moved to Southgate from Detroit and started a blacksmith shop which soon became an important commercial center for African Americans living within reach of white Republicans during the Reconstruction period. By 1870 there were three churches serving black residents: one located on West Main Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets; one located on North Second Street near Griggs Road; and one located off Washington Avenue near Brush Creek Road outside present day Park Rapids.) In 1875 John White opened his grocery store at 7th & Woodward Avenue which became known as White's Grocery after him. By 1901 there were six stores providing groceries to black residents: two operated by White himself, four by friends or family membersof those employees (John Hilliard and Willis Thornton), three by J.Watson Brown (jr.), two by Abram Dixon (), one each by Wm Ewing () and Joshua Goode (). Aftermath donations helped build new home for Swartzgrid school across road from where she once lived) The first post office in Southgate was established at East Main Street on December 12, 1836 under the name "Saginaw". It served only Black residents until March 4 1840 when it reopened under the name "South Gate". On January 3 1850 David Dudley opened a store at 8th & Woodward Ave., later becoming known as Dudley's Store#2(). This store closed May 15 1860 due to competition from James Fenton’s store (#1), now occupied by Dick’s Sporting Goods across Woodward Ave.). On February 28 1861 Samuel Welles fished schooners upriver from Saginaw Bay with assistance given by fellow resident Amos Earp (). Between 1861-1866 five different grist mills were built along Saginaw River including Welles Mill #1(), Welles Mill #2() both west side riverbanks just downstream of today’s intersection US 231/Moses Lake Rd.,Welles Mill #3() upstream along Mapes Creek Rd.,and finally Waterford Mills (& Old Indian Trail) built about 6 miles northwest of present day village limits opposite current location Spring Grove Twp./SouthGate.) On January 20 1865 Jesse grant opened his general merchandise store at 8th & Walnut Aves.. Grant ran this business until 1898 when he sold it to Wm Bresnahan who also ran this store until 1912 When Bresnahan sold it back again to Jesse grant who operated it till 1916 when he discontinued operations because WWI interrupted production). In 1916 Joe Gibbs operating hardware stores began selling firearms out front his stores.. One year later prohibition made products like guns not legal so those stores stopped operation too) In 1924 Driscoll Peebles established an automotive repair shop at 9th&Salmon Aves that would become successful enough that he started trading stocks nationally over the phone (). That same year Revillius “Red” Smith opened a restaurant/bar called The Rascal next door to Peebles'. Smith would continue running this business until his death in 1978.)

The first post office in Southgate was opened in 1868, but it closed in 1870. The first store in town was built on Main Street in 1875 by John WOODWARD and his father-in-law JOSEPH HENRY WHITEHEAD. The city's first school was established in 1886 by Drury CLARKSON and Mrs AYLES DAVIS with a classroom and kitchenette for students grades 1 to 8. In 1907, a new high school was built on Farmington Road adjacent to present day Southgate Municipal Airport which served as the township's only high school until 1958 when East MICHIGAN HIGH SCHOOLopened nearby In 1933, following passage of act 22 which authorized public works projects throughout the state of Michigan including construction of ramps leading from I-89 to local roads near urban centers such as Dearborn Heights and Southgate; "The State Highway Commission Order No.: 33" authorizes all municipalities within its jurisdiction to erect communication towers providing service between Detroit and various other communities within their limits; also authorizing electric streetlights along certain routes serving rural areas outside metropolitanDetroit This type or order would later become known as an ordinance or regulation under what became known as "The James law" because it helped create Midtown Districts throughout most major American cities during the late 20th century As part of this programmatic effort; work began immediately upon enactment prior to even taking effect on November 17th 1933 beginning with erection Of Tower No: 765 Located On Main Street In Downtown Southgate This tower would be replaced By Another Tower Later That Year Which Was Erected Near The Waterfront And Now Called Tower No: 924 Located On Elm Street Just North Of Village Hall
