Southgate, Michigan is a small town in the lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. It is located about 25 miles east of Detroit and about 15 miles west of Lansing. Southgate is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a farming village on the banks of the Huron River in 1824. In 1892, Southgate became a city when it was annexed by Detroit. In 1957, Southgate was again annexed by Muskegon Heights when that community became a part of Lansing. In 2002, Southgate voted to become an international airport under control of Delta Air Lines with plans to offer services to Canada and Mexico. The first settlers in Southgate were those who came to this area from New England in 1796. They built a cabin on the banks of the Muskegon River and named it after their home country, South gate in Essex County, Massachusetts. In 1814, two brothers by the name of Southgate settled near present-day Northport and founded what would become Southgate Township. They were later joined by other families and began farming land that now includes most of Southgate Township and much of Washtenaw County. The township was incorporated as a village in 1916. The current version of Southgate was laid out in 1871 when James Mapes bought an acreage east of present-day Town Hall for $1,000 cash and developed it into what is today known as North Gate Park . He named his new community after his old home county – England’s Manchester . The first post office was opened at North Gate on November 12, 1871 . "In 1697 English colonists arrived at Plymouth Plantation during King George II's war with France (known then as Acadia). Many people died along the way due to illness or battle wounds; however about eighty Englishmen decided to stay behind to start a new life on land they had purchased northeast of Detroit." -Wikipedia Southgate became a village on December 3rd 1916 due to being one vote shy from becoming city status which would have given it more powers such as council members and zoning regulations.
