The St. Clair Shores Air National Guard Station is one of the largest air force stations in the United States and it has a rich history that goes back to World War I. The air force station was originally established as an airport in 1913, and it served as a primary refueling stop for both American Airlines and the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War I. The station was also used as a training ground for future members of the US military. In 1945, the air force station was transferred to the US Army and it served as an army base until 1955 when it became part of the USAF. The USAF operated the air force station until its closure in 1993. During its tenure, the USAF equipped and maintained several highly advanced aircraft including jets such as Lockheed L-1011 Super Constellations and Boeing 727s. Aftermath of closure: In 1993, due to budget cuts, the St. Clair Shores Air National Guard Station closed down effective September 1st after 25 years of operation. All squadron assets were turned over to other state agencies or mothballed at other military installations across Michigan without any notice or notification to squadron members or their families. No opportunity was given for affected individuals to voice their concerns about what would happen to their squadron once it closed down or how they would be able to maintain contact with loved ones while away at war or on deployments overseas without interruption/support from Headquarters AFB Michigan despite repeated requests by family members since 1994
St. Clair Shores is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Detroit River, about 20 miles east of downtown Detroit.
