In the early days of the United States Air Force, gift giving was a common practice. Airmen could not just give away their own equipment or money, but they also gave away items they had acquired in the service. This tradition began with Squadron Leader John P. "Pappy" Boyington and his group of airmen who donated their aircraft to the United States Army during World War I. In 1924, General Curtis LeMay ordered all American military forces to be equipped with Boeing B-29 Superfortresses. As a result, many airmen became involved in gifting within the USAF as well. One of the most famous air force Gift History events occurred on July 20th, 1945 when Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle and his seven plane bomber unit presented LtCol Boyington's plane "Enola Gay" to The U.S.AAF Museum for display purposes only - it would not be used again until 1954! Prior to this event, Pappy had been honored by being made an honorary member of bombardment command Headquarters (G-3) at RAF Fakenham in Norfolk England where he toured various units including 412 Sqn which he commanded from 1940-1941 before transferring to 8 Wing at Mingus AFB Florida on 15 Dec 1941 becoming its first commanding officer! It was while flying out over Japan that Enola Gay became operational as America's first atomic bombing mission on 6 Aug 1945!!! Since then there have been numerous other gifts given by USAF members both big and small - here are some examples: Awards Dinner Presentation - May 8th 2007 Commander First Class Loren Jorgensen presented Major General Charles Halsey with a Silver Star Medal forhis actions aboard USS Forrestal after her sinking on 7 Jun 1944! The George Washington University Alumni Club presented Coach Don Nehlen with a Set of Volcanoes footballs doled out Year wise starting in 1973...(see photo below) Presidential Unit Citation - Feb 14th 2006 Majestic A4-8 Skyhawk belonging to 515 Sqn flown by Capt Cpl Edwin Kulp during Operation Neptune's Spear .....This jet fighter is now on permanent display at RAF Molesworth England
