The United States Army gift history begins with the first American soldiers marching into Sturgis, Michigan on September 14, 1867. The town was then named for General George Custer, who had been killed in a battle near the town two years earlier. Since then, it has been home to many pieces of American military history including tanks and planes that have taken part in conflicts around the world. Today, Ft Riley is primarily a research center focused on Army weapon systems development and history. It also contains a number of museums that offer exhibits on military life in America from before World War II through today’s wars abroad.
