In 1906, Sturgis became the county seat of Washtenaw County and was renamed for General George Washington Sturgis, commander of United States forces during the Mexican-American War and later governor of Michigan Territory (1846-1849). Sturgis is a city in the US state of Michigan and the county seat of St. Clair County. The population was 20,603 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Sturgis was John Prentice, who arrived in 1796. The city's name was given to it by General Dodge while he was visiting the area during the War for Independence. On July 4, 1837, a force from Dearborn led by Colonel Augustus Dearborn attacked an Indian encampment near present-day downtown Sturgis with cannon and cavalry while Indians were gathering corn near Fort Michilimackinac on Lake Huron. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for Dearborn and his forces over the Indians, driving them back across the river to their reservation just north of town. In 1839, when Michigan became a U.S territory following Confederation, Sturgis became its capital; however, that location changed several times before becoming its current one in 1874 when City Hall (now known as First National Bank Building) was built on West Main Street between Third and Fourth Avenues. In 1862 General George Armstrong Custer rode through town on his way to Battle Creek where he fought against General Grant at Bull Run; some reports claim that Custer also visited nearby White Sands Reservation along with other American military leaders during this time period which may have influenced his thoughts about westward expansionism later on in life. In 1865 Union Major General James Benge surrendered at Big Sandy Springs nearpresent-day Mount Clemens after leading 200 men into battle against 3rd Michigan Cavalry Regiment under Colonel Samuel French without surrendering himself or any equipment or supplies.HarrisonKemp.
