Coffee was first grown in the area now known as Traverse City, Michigan, in the late 1800s. The first coffee plantation in the region was founded by Peter Holmquist and his brothers in 1892. In 1916, Traverse City's first coffee shop opened on Belle Isle.
Traverse City is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 30,811 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Menominee County. The first humans to inhabit what is now Traverse City were Native American traders and travelers who passed through the area on their way to or from trade with other parts of North America. The earliest permanent settler in what would become Traverse City was James Sutherlin, who built a log cabin on the east bank of Muskegon River in 1824. In 1827, he married Rachel Lynde, daughter of Samuel Lynde and his wife Ann (née Ford). The town was platted as a village in 1837 by Nathan York, one of the original trustees of Huron Township, which bordered present-day Traverse City on two sides. The first post office was established at York's Cabin in 1840; it was renamed Traverse City in 1853 after its founder and first mayor, John C. Frick. In 1860, Detroit became an independent republic and Traverse City became part of that republic as well; however, it reverted to Michigan when United States federal government takeover occurred upon secession from the United States that year. From 1861 until 1975, Traverse City had its own congressional district; however this arrangement ceased to exist when Michigan seceded from the Union following the Civil War. Governor George Romney appointed William Ladd as Territorial Governor for what would become Menominee County on Aug 1st 1871; within 2 years he had given direction for construction of a bridge over Big White River connecting Hastings with Inkster Township (now part of East Lansing) – both towns lay within present day Menominee County jurisdiction at that time; only Stettler township lay beyond territorial limits at that time On October 15th 1870 George Romney made known his intention to establish “an agency” on Mud Lake about 12 miles due north east from where he resided near Green Bay & Gratiot Rivers with intentions to open up land for farming & manufactures……..This organization soon came under various names but we will call it Lakeshore Mining Company…..It should be noted that this company did not start out mining coal but began operations around 1886 making it one hundred years old today
