Walker, Michigan is a small city in the heart of the Great Lakes region. The population was 5,822 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montcalm County and a Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) with a population of 11,711. The town was founded by Nicholas Walker in 1837. It became an incorporated village in 1907 and a town in 1930. The first coffee beans were grown on land that now includes part of downtown Walker. A mill opened in 1860 and processed coffee for local merchants and residents until 1903 when it closed because of competition from other mills in the area. In 1906, NicholasWalker donated 50 acres (20 km2) to the community for use as an open-air market garden with improved access to water resources for growing food crops such as maize, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, etc.. This initial market garden remains one of Walker's most important heritage attractions today. In 1930, Walker became an independent municipality with its own government which continues to operate today. The name "Walker" comes from Nicholas Walker's donation which is still used by the municipal government today

Walker is a city on the east side of the Kawkawlin River in Wayne County, Michigan. The population was 9,055 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by surveyors named John A. Walker and James H. Dawson as a trading post on the river's banks. The first store opened there in 1840, and Walker became an important commercial center for eastern Upper Michigan. In 1848, Walker became the capital of Wayne County when it was created from part of Shiawassee County. In 1862, Walker was chosen as site for what would become United States Army’s Fort Detroit; it served as a military garrison until 1865 when it was surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant following his victory at Vicksburg. At that time, Fort Detroit became one of several military installations along the Mississippi River serving Union troops during the war effort against Confederate forces across America. In 1861, after Mobile had been captured by Confederate forces and burned by Federal troops under orders from Abraham Lincoln, local residents raised money and recruited volunteers to help rebuild Mobile; these men were known as “The Red Lads” because they wore red uniforms while serving in the Union army. By 1862, however, most of Mobile's inhabitants had either deserted or fled to safer havens such as Pensacola or Jackson Heights on Alabama's Gulf Coast; consequently, only about 20% of its pre-war population remained within its limits when Union forces captured it in November 1863. When Union forces entered Mobile again in April 1865 following General Sherman's march through Alabama towards Montgomery), most of downtown Mobile including much of First Ward (which included Walker) were destroyed or looted during what is still called "The Battle for Mobile."A few months later on May 6th 1865 Federal troops burned down all but one block (the old downtown) of what is now Fourth Ward in downtownMobile resulting in substantial loss both financially and human life due to firebombing which also destroyed many homes not reached by flames both before & after bombardment

Walker was founded in 1857 as a post office and settlement on the Ottawa River by white settlers who were attracted to its fertile soil and proximity to Detroit. The name honor General George Washington, who had strategic interests in the area. The first store in Walker was built by John Hendrickson in 1857. By 1860, Walker had a grocery and flour mill; a blacksmith shop; two churches; and two schools. In 1865, the town became home to one of America's first water systems when it was connected to Detroit through a pipeline.Walker's fortunes changed after World War II when large quantities of steel were produced south of the border for war production. Steel companies began investing money inWalker and other towns along the Upper Peninsula, which led to job growth and new housing developments such as Midtown Park (later known as Midtown Village). The population peaked at 10,000 in 1960 but has declined since then due to commute times from downtown Kalamazoo and competition from larger cities around them. In 2001, Walker voters passed an ordinance declaring themselves "the world's smallest city" with a population of 447 residents – fewer than half of whom lived within 1 mile (1 km) of their homes!
