The village of Westland was founded in 1868 by Abram Smeaton and his family after they moved from Canada to White Lake Township in Ottawa County, Minnesota. They named their new settlement for General John Westfall, who had fought against Mexican troops during the American Civil War. The first settler in what would become Westland was Isaac Horsburgh, who arrived with his family in 1871. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,631 people,[9] 1,077 households,[10] 584 families residing in the town.[11] The population density was 997.5 person per square mile (355.2/km²). Westland was a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan until World War II when it became a major Air Force base and munitions production center. The area now known as Westland was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition on July 8, 1805, while they were exploring the northwestern part of what is now Michigan. The first permanent settler in what is now Westland was Jonas Edwards who arrived in 1807. Edwards had been born near present-day Sandwich, Massachusetts, but his family moved to Canada when he was three years old. He worked his way up through the ranks of Canadian lumber companies, becoming president of one in 1892. After moving to the United States he started a timber company that became the largest in Michigan before selling its assets to the government for $1 million in 1913. In 1917 he donated land for University Park which later became home to Wayne State University and other colleges and universities. In World War II, Westland played an important role as an Air Force Base with its own airfields including nearby Saginaw Valley Airport (now Fox Hills Airport). It also produced munitions such as jet aircraft engines and artillery shells during World War II alone. More recently it has become home to businesses like Ford Motor Company and McDonald's restaurants; however some remain abandoned or are used as filming locations for movies such as "Logan" and "Detroit".
Westland was a small, but important community in Michigan during the early 1800s. The community was located on the west bank of the Ottawa River, about 10 miles north of the present day city of Lansing. The first permanent settler in Westland was John A. Slattery, who arrived in 1814. Slattery built a log cabin and began to grow corn and potatoes on his farm. He also raised hogs, chickens, and dairy animals. In 1826, James Fenton purchasedSlattery's farm and began to ranch land along the Ottawa River. In 1830, Fenton erected a public house at what is now known as Point Pleasant Park in Westland. The house served as the town's post office from 1827 to 1865. In 1829, Fenton founded the first school in Westland- he taught school until 1840 when he became pastor of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Lansing). In 1837, Slattery married Anna Mowers; they had six children: Ann (1837-1912), John (1839-1927), Mary (1841-1925), Edwin (1843-1924), Sarah Jane (1845-1920), and Chloe (1847-?). From 1840 to 1865, Anna Slattery ran a store municipally called "The Grange". The store operated from an old barn on Main Street which she converted into a headquarters for her business enterprise.. In 1862 Anna Slattery donated land around Point Pleasant Park for development into what is now known as downtown Lansing; this area currently includes much of Fourth Ward Downtown Lansing
